Mistaken shooting report locks down two Oklahoma middle schools

PONCA CITY (AP) — Two middle schools in Ponca City were locked down after a mistaken report following a fatal shooting at Stillwater Junior High School.

Ponca City schools operations director Brett Smith says a caller to a local radio station on Wednesday apparently heard reports of the Stillwater shooting and thought it had occurred in Ponca City. Smith says the radio station called police — who then locked down East and West Middle Schools in Ponca City.

Smith says police quickly determined there was no threat in Ponca City, which is about 45 miles north of Stillwater.

One student died in an apparent suicide Wednesday at Stillwater Junior High School.
