Shaken or stirred, an eclectic group of performing artists and arts organizations are mixing up what promises to be a potent cocktail of live entertainment this weekend.
The inaugural Mixology: A Live Performance Sampler will feature a diverse lineup of performers rotating through three spaces starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday at City Arts Center at State Fair Park. Attendees will get to sample traditional African-based music and dance, spoken word poetry, improvisational comedy theater, modern and aerial dance, conceptual theater and more.
Michelle Dexter, director of 10-year-old Perpetual Motion Dance and co-founder of Mixology, likened the event to “speed dating for the performing arts.”
“Audience members pay one ticket price and can travel throughout the City Arts Center to see performances in rotating sets. It should be a blast,” Dexter said in an email.
Performers will include Perpetual Motion; African-rooted music and dance ensemble Grupo AfroCaribeno; improvisational theater showcase OKC Improv; jazz and hip-hop dance company R.A.C.E.; collaborative theater group The Drama Dept; hip-hop artist Reality; spoken-word poet Lauren Zuniga; and solo performance artists Lindsey Allgood, Rachel Bruce-Johnson, Emily Kzany and Bernard Roddy.
“Our goal with this event is (to) expose audiences to often underrepresented and innovative art forms and provide a new platform for local artists,” said Allgood, one of the event's organizers, in an email.
Mixology is devised to let attendees experience a wide array of artistic expression in a fun and flexible environment. The artists on the lineup will switch between the three performance areas throughout the night, each serving up multiple works along the way.
Rather than gulping down a full two-hour performance by a single group, eventgoers will be able to sip and sample, moving freely throughout the arts center to check out different artists' sets, all for the affordable ticket price of $10.
Mixology's organizers want to make the all-ages event an annual affair. Hopefully, their collaborative efforts to shake up the local arts' community will be rewarded with plenty of new patrons.
