“Because of (Kemp's) age (27) and everything else, he is probably the best player in the game at this point,” said Torre, who is MLB's executive vice president for baseball operations.

Kemp was named the NL Player of the Week for the abbreviated first week of the season. He hit .412 (7 for 17) with two home runs, six runs scored, eight RBIs and 14 total bases in four games.

Torre told the website he always liked Kemp's desire to be in the lineup.

“He has always been a kid who wants to play every single day, and you like to see that,” Torre told the website. “I am really proud of what he has done, and I have told him that a time or two. You're happy for him, because he was a good kid.”
