Moms praise Oklahoma schools

Oklahoma schools provide a better overall education than those in Mexico, and learning English is an added bonus, half a dozen Hispanic women said Tuesday while waiting for their children.

"They are learning many more things here, and the teaching is more advanced,” said Maria Magdalena, the mother of a 4-year-old who was waiting outside Capitol Hill Elementary School.

"Here, they are given many more opportunities,” said Luz Elena Garcia, as her sister, second-grader Suzanna Garcia, climbed into their truck.

Maria Aguilar, a baby on one hip, was pleased that her kindergartner is learning both English and sign-language at Wheeler Elementary School.

"I like it because they have good teachers, and the principal is very, very strict with the kids,” Aguilar said in English. Her daughter's teacher has urged her to speak English at home, at least part of the time.

Asked what she would change about the school, Aguilar expressed only one wish: "More translators.”
