PARIS (AP) — Radamel Falcao scored his eighth goal of the season as Monaco beat struggling Lyon 2-1 to keep the pressure on Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the French league.
PSG, which is unbeaten in 28 games, has a better goal difference and only needs a draw away to Saint-Etienne later Sunday to regain top spot from Monaco. Saint-Etienne was PSG's bogey side last season, winning away, drawing at home, and knocking them out of the League Cup quarterfinals on penalty kicks.
Midfielder Mounir Obbadi gave Monaco the lead in the 28th minute with his first goal of the season. Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes punched away a corner but the ball fell to Obbadi about 25 meters out and he hit a powerful half-volley into the top right corner.
"I just caught it well and it went in," Obbadi said.
Falcao added a second goal in the 36th with a clinical finish before striker Bafetimbi Gomis pulled a goal back for Lyon in the second half.
Falcao had not scored in his previous three league games but put an end to his mini-slump in fine style.
A long pass from defense deflected off the back of midfielder Joao Moutinho and fell to Falcao. He sprinted into the penalty area down the right, beat the left back for pace and expertly chipped the ball over Lopes as he charged off his line.
"Falcao works hard for the team, he closes down, he holds the ball up," Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri said. "Everyone should try and play for him more."
