Montana QB named candidate for freshman honor

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — University of Montana quarterback Trent McKinney is one of 16 players named to the first list of candidates for the Rice Award, which is given to the top freshman football player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

McKinney, a redshirt freshman from Mililani, Hawaii, has completed 94 of 137 passes for 941 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions this season. He is Montana's second-leading rusher with 55 carries for 294 yards and four more scores. He is averaging 245.2 yards of total offense per game.

The Rice Award, named for legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice, will be voted on by a national panel of sports information directors, media and others at the end of the regular season and is awarded by The Sports Network. The final ballot will include 20 finalists.
