Looking to turn up the heat on your hairstyle? The warm spring and summer months are the perfect time to go wild with your hair. Whether it's a platinum blond pixie cut, trying out a cone-shaped curling iron, or giving bangs a go, Hollywood's hotlist is always on the cutting edge of style trends. And you, too, can have Hollywood hair if you're brave enough. If you don't want to go extreme, take inspiration from the styles and ask your stylist for a toned-down version.
Bangs, not Botox
Bangs are great on most women, though many are nervous about making such a commitment. This year, bangs are everywhere and they come with several benefits. They give an instant face-lift by hiding any wrinkles or lines on your forehead. They're easy to style and they look great with an easy bun or ponytail.
If you're not sure about getting bangs, try out clip-in bangs, available at beauty supply stores.
Pomp it up
Men and women have been sporting these punky styles for a couple of years now, but the pomp actually dates to the 18th century and was named for Madame de Pompadour, mistress of King Louis XV. Pompadours are a great style to rock for a special event because you can create a pomp with many lengths and styles of hair.
Similar to the Pompadour, the rave shave is an edgier version of the style where both sides of the hair are actually shaved, rather than slicked back as in a Pompadour. Raves became popular in the 1990s, and are basically dance parties with psychedelic music and lights.
Braids are big time, and that's a great thing because there are virtually endless ways to style your hair using braids. For a formal evening, try a French braid across the crown of your hair and bind into a long, romantic ponytail.
On a bad hair day, French braid your hair diagonally across the back to the nape of your neck, then twist the rest into a bun. Finish the bun with a big flower and you'll look like a movie star.
Big girl curls
Texas-sized hair is back and you can't get your hair much bigger than with curls. Whether you love loose beachy waves like Shakira's or dozens of tight spirals like Beyonce's, the trick to this style is having the right tools and styling products.
Here's a tip for achieving a full head of beautiful curls in half the time it would take to do each curl with a cone-shaped iron (they make great modern-looking curls, but are tricky and time consuming to use). Section off the topmost layers of your hair and the middle layers. Use hot rollers on the underside of your hair except around your face. On the middle section, use a barrel-shaped curling iron. On the top layers, and around your face, finish the look with spirals created with a cone-shaped iron.
Punk rock pixie
Miley Cyrus shocked many folks when she went platinum and cut her long hair off into a super short 'do. The result? Sexy and playful.
Super-short styles are huge this year. When deciding whether to take the plunge, consider a few things. Short hair is great in the heat but contrary to popular notions, it's not always the most low-maintenance choice. It needs to be trimmed more often than longer styles and many short styles need to be washed and styled every day to look right.
