MOORE — The new Southmoore High School's pom squad has a fundraising campaign that they hope will become a school tradition.
For the past two weeks, squad members have been planting pink flamingos on front lawns in and around south Oklahoma City in an effort to raise funds for an upcoming trip. The bright pink, plastic flamingos "infest” a yard overnight and are removed by pom squad members in exchange for a small cash donation. Robin Curran, a pom squad booster club member, said some homeowners have even requested that another person's yard be visited by the exotic waterfowl. The donations collected will be used to help pay for a trip to Orlando, Fla. The squad received a high rating during a competition at the University of Oklahoma this summer. The rating made the group eligible to compete at a national competition in Orlando in late January. School officials said the fundraising campaign will carry on throughout the fall.
