NORMAN — A coach at Moore High School has been charged in Cleveland County with inappropriately touching a minor, court documents show.
Aaron Jarrard Howell, 38, was charged Thursday in Cleveland County District Court with one count of lewd acts with a child younger than 16.
According to court documents, Howell molested a female student at his residence over the course of four years. The inappropriate physical contact began with Howell slapping the student’s buttocks, but escalated to aggressive groping and touching, the documents allege.
The court papers do not explain why the student was at Howell’s residence.
Howell has served as the Moore boys basketball coach for the past 10 seasons. This past season was one of Howell’s best. The Lions won 10 of their final 14 games, including playoff victories over Edmond North and Norman, to finish 17-10.
Howell turned himself in May 5 after police questioned him at Moore High School, an Oklahoma City police spokeswoman said.
Howell was released from jail May 7, an Oklahoma County jail spokeswoman said.
Moore Public Schools declined to answer questions regarding Howell’s employment history or current status.
“We are cooperating with authorities,” school district spokesman Jimi Fleming said. “ As it is a personnel matter, we have no further comment.”
