— Police locked down an elementary school Monday after staff members found a loaded gun inside the school, officials said.

An investigation revealed the gun was mistakenly left in a classroom at Plaza Towers Elementary, 852 SW 11, by the relative of a female teacher, Moore police spokesman Sgt. Jeremy Lewis said.

The female teacher and her relative went to the school to fix a computer in another teacher's room, Lewis said.

“They were up there working this weekend,” Lewis said. “He didn't realize it was in his pocket. It fell out in the chair he was sitting in.”

The classroom teacher notified administrators when he discovered the gun in his chair before class began Monday. The school was on lockdown while police investigated how the gun got there, authorities said.

“Police were called, they searched all the building and the outbuilding, and we kept students at school in the cafeteria,” said Vicky Brickman, a school spokeswoman.

Students never handled the gun, she said.

The lockdown ended about 9:40 a.m., Brickman said.

Police will turn over their investigation to the district attorney's office, Lewis said. He declined to provide the names of the individuals involved. has disabled the comments for this article.
