SHAWNEE - Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information that might aid in the investigation of 2-year-old Kelsey Smith-Briggs' death to come forward.
"I need people to come forward with information that I know is out there," Pottawatomie County District Attorney Richard Smothermon said Friday. "We're talking about getting justice for a child's death."
Authorities say a blow to the stomach killed Kelsey on Oct. 11. Her stepfather, Michael Lee Porter, 25, is charged with first-degree murder. Her mother, Raye Dawn Porter, 26, is under investigation. Each denies responsibility.
Kelsey was removed from Raye Dawn Porter's custody in January 2005 on suspicion that she was being abused. She was returned to her mother in June, but her care was being monitored by child welfare workers when she died.
Smothermon said Friday that authorities have received hundreds of anonymous tips and possible leads in the case, but much of the information cannot be substantiated.
Smothermon said the tipsters are reluctant to get involved.
Kelsey's mother and father, 28-year-old Lance Briggs, are from Meeker.
