  • Sidewalks invite unexpected encounters

BY CHARLOTTE LANKARD, For The Oklahoman | Updated: Mon, Mar 2, 2015

Sidewalks are being built in many Oklahoma City neighborhoods. It reminds me of an Easter weekend a few years back when I walked around my son’s Texas neighborhood with sidewalks on every street. As I moved through the neighborhood, I was greeted by adults pulling weeds, teenagers playing basketball, an Easter egg hunt for children who lived in the block, lawn chairs sitting in front yards inviting me to stop and visit — and fire hydrants painted pink. Yes, it was exercise, but it was also a pleasant timeout — a pause in the middle of a busy weekend. Sidewalks invite us to come outdoors. Children use them for riding bikes and skating. Adults use them for exercise or to go next door or down the block.
