Oklahoma’s running backs have carried the ball 139 times through four games this season with zero fumbles. That’s especially impressive, considering the youth at the position. True freshman Samaje Perine has been the team’s leading rusher thus far, with sophomores Keith Ford and Alex Ross contributing lots as well. Ford was the team’s top option at running back before a leg injury suffered Sept. 13 against Tennessee. Ball security was a major question for Ford coming into the season; as a true freshman in 2013, he saw playing time early before fumbling issues sidelined him. Asked if running backs are carrying the ball differently this season, position coach Cale Gundy said, “No. We do the same thing we always

Oklahoma sophomore linebacker Jordan Evans moved into the Sooners’ starting lineup while Frank Shannon — last year’s leading tackler — was fighting a one-year suspension after he was found to have violated the university’s Title IX sexual misconduct policy. Earlier this month, Shannon lost his appeal in court, allowing OU to enforce its suspension. Shannon was with the team through its first two games, but didn’t play. “It’s weird, obviously, but at the same time, when opportunities come you’ve gotta take advantage of them,” Evans said. “When the door opened, I had opened it myself and made myself known and made myself able to do that, but it was not possible without the people around me.
