  • Feds approve labels for Elk Valley

Nick Trougakos | Published: Fri, Sep 19, 2014

There haven’t been a ton of new labels approved by federal regulators recently for Oklahoma beermakers. Prairie had three approved last week, but it’s been a slow scene otherwise. This week however, the state’s newest brewer appears ready to get into the game. The feds approved a pair of labels for Elk Valley Brewing Co. […]

Nick Trougakos | Published: Mon, Sep 15, 2014

We’re now less than two weeks away from the annual ZooBrew beer tasting, and the lineup of beers at the Sept. 26 event is taking shape. If you’re looking for tickets, you better act quickly. I’m told there are only about 100 spots left for the event. Attendance will be capped at 850, so you […]

  • Prairie approved for new labels

Nick Trougakos | Published: Fri, Sep 12, 2014

Quick post today. Just wanted to pass along three labels that were approved by federal regulators this week for Prairie Artisan Ales. Keep your eyes open for these new releases. I do enjoy a beer made with blackberries, so I’ll be on the lookout for Tulsa Funk, myself.

  • Cutting-room floor: Roughtail Brewing

Nick Trougakos | Published: Wed, Sep 10, 2014

It’s time for the final installment in my cutting-room floor series, featuring leftover nuggets from my interviews with Prairie, Anthem and Roughtail for the LOOKatOKC piece on the state’s craft beer scene. Today, let’s hear from Roughtail brewmaster Tony Tielli. -On Roughtail’s first building at NE 14 and Broadway: “We had a really cool old […]

  • Roughtail to participate in new Edmond event

Nick Trougakos | Published: Tue, Sep 9, 2014

Is Edmond trying to stage its own version of H&8th? Maybe not exactly, but a pretty-cool-sounding community event/street festival is set to debut in Edmond on Sept. 20. That’s when the first Heard on Hurd is set at the corner of Broadway and Hurd. As a bonus to beer lovers out there, Roughtail Brewing Co. […]

  • Cutting-room floor: Anthem Brewing

Nick Trougakos | Published: Mon, Sep 8, 2014

Last week I posted some leftover quotes from Prairie Artisan Ale’s Chase Healey — a spin-off from my LOOKatOKC interview with Prairie, Anthem and Roughtail. I’ll follow up today with some extras from my discussion with Anthem Brewing’s Matt Anthony. -On naming his brewery: “Originally it was going to be called The Brothers Stout. My […]

  • Black Mesa eyes first barrel-aged project

Nick Trougakos | Updated: Fri, Sep 5, 2014

Seems like it’s been a quiet few months for Black Mesa Brewing Co. since the company claimed a gold medal at the World Beer Cup for its ESB back in April. I caught up recently with Black Mesa’s Brad Stumph, and it turns out they haven’t just been resting on their laurels. Stumph confirmed they […]

  • Marshall Brewing plans busy September

Nick Trougakos | Published: Wed, Sep 3, 2014

How about a little update on the state’s latest Oktoberfest news? For starters, I just bottled a batch of homebrew Oktoberfest on Monday night. Because I’m just a simple homebrewer with no ready access to temperature control, I fermented with ale yeast. I’ve done that each of the past three years, with good results each […]

  • Cutting-room floor: Prairie Artisan Ales

Nick Trougakos | Updated: Wed, Sep 3, 2014

When you gather enough material to write a roughly 3,000-word feature on three of Oklahoma’s craft brewers, you’re bound to have some stuff you simply cannot fit into the story. That was the case with my recent story on Prairie Artisan Ales, Anthem Brewing and Roughtail Brewing. I transcribed nearly two hours of combined interviews […]

  • Oklahoma brewers take advantage of 3.2-strength beer sales

By Nick Trougakos, Local Editor | Published: Tue, Aug 26, 2014

More and more of Oklahoma’s full-strength beermakers are opting to produce and sell so-called low-point beer. They are prohibited by law from selling their full-strength beer directly to the public.

  • Elk Valley to team with Choc on production

Nick Trougakos | Published: Mon, Aug 25, 2014

It’s a tale almost all of Oklahoma’s craft brewers can relate to. You think you’re going to open a craft brewery, but the process invariably takes several months longer than expected. There are stops and starts, changes in plans and unforeseen roadblocks. The latest brewer navigating that bumpy path is Elk Valley Brewing Co. Brewmaster […]

Plenty of odds and ends on the Oklahoma craft beer scene to pass along as we slide into the weekend. -For starters, Republic Gastropub has scheduled a German beer dinner for Aug. 26. The dinner will feature six German beers, four of which will be paired with a four-course, German-inspired menu. The cost is $50 […]

Those looking for a chance to take home some Roughtail Brewing Co. beer straight from the brewery are in luck. Roughtail confirms they will soon begin offering growler fills — and pints — of low-point beer at their Midwest City brewhouse. They will become at least the fourth brewer of full-strength beer in Oklahoma to […]

Unibroue master brewer Jerry Vietz made a publicity tour through Oklahoma last week, and I was fortunate enough to be able to sit down with him at TapWerks during his Oklahoma City swing to talk beer and sample some of his latest creations. The highlight of the night was getting to sample three different versions […]
