  • Homebrew kit gets hobby back on track

Nick Trougakos | Published: Mon, Nov 3, 2014

Call it the curse of familiarity. I’ve been homebrewing almost three years now. Certainly not long enough to call myself some sort of expert, but long enough to have the process memorized and to brew without looking at an instruction sheet or guidebook. Along the way, I graduated from extract, to brew-in-a-bag all-grain, to full-volume […]

TapWerks Ale House is finalizing plans for the annual International Stout Day celebration — set for Nov. 6 — and it looks like they’ll have quite the interesting lineup of beers. Below is a list of what is confirmed, provided by TapWerks. TapWerks general manager Greg Powell said there may still be a few surprises […]

One of the metro-area’s faster-growing beer tasting events is coming up soon, and it features quite the solid list of beer vendors. The 2014 version of OKBio BrewFest is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The event was moved to the ballpark to allow for more space after […]

  • Edmond council gives green light to craft beer bar

Nick Trougakos | Updated: Tue, Oct 28, 2014

The Edmond City Council on Monday night gave final approval for a new craft beer bar in downtown Edmond. Following a 4-1 vote from the council, owners of the Patriarch Craft Beer House & Lawn now are eying a March opening for the bar, which will be housed in a 100-plus-year-old house at 9 E […]

  • COOP preps for release of new low-point beers

Nick Trougakos | Published: Tue, Oct 21, 2014

COOP Ale Works gained federal label approval for four beers recently, and of significance is that two of the labels are for canned beers expected to be released in the grocery/convenience store market in the coming months. Here’s your first look at COOP Briefcase Brown and Negative Split: I’ll have much more information on these […]

  • Prairie preps for 2nd anniversary party

Nick Trougakos | Published: Mon, Oct 13, 2014

If you’re already planning to be in the Tulsa area this weekend — say for the Tulsa Oktoberfest — why not add one more event to your list: Prairie Artisan Ales’ second anniversary party. The Tulsa brewery, 1803B S 49th W Ave., will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday for the celebration. Included […]

  • Marshall eyes El CuCuy, This Machine release dates

Nick Trougakos | Published: Mon, Oct 13, 2014

I shared some label art on Facebook late last week concerning 12 oz. bottles of Marshall Brewing’s El CuCuy Black IPA and This Machine Belgian IPA. I had a chance to follow up with Marshall’s Wes Alexander this morning to pin down some information on release dates for the two beers. Alexander confirms the beers […]

  • New Anthem beer a tribute to meteorologist

Nick Trougakos | Published: Wed, Oct 8, 2014

The guys at Anthem Brewing Co. certainly do love them some Emily Sutton. And Sutton, the morning meteorologist for KFOR, is apparently something of a beer fan. This much came to light back in May at the Oklahoma Craft Beer Festival, where Anthem poured a one-off beer named after Sutton. Now Anthem has taken the […]

  • Roughtail plans brewery cornhole tourney

Nick Trougakos | Published: Wed, Oct 1, 2014

When I learned that Roughtail Brewing planned to host a cornhole tournament at its brewery, I immediately thought I needed to ask why they had decided to do that. It didn’t take me long to realize that asking why they are hosting the tourney is the wrong question altogether. The better question is, why would […]

  • Craft beer on tap at Tulsa State Fair, other locales

Nick Trougakos | Published: Thu, Sep 25, 2014

The annual Tulsa State Fair begins today, and craft beer fans in attendance will not be left wanting. Marshall Brewing Co.’s Wes Alexander reached out to let me know about craft options at the fair: “The fair organizers are very craft beer friendly and offer Marshall a booth selling four draft beers in the Made […]

  • Where is the Choc?

Nick Trougakos | Published: Tue, Sep 23, 2014

I went to the State Fair on Saturday. There’s a lot you can say about the Oklahoma State Fair — it may be one of the greatest displays of humanity in the world. Humanity aside, one thing I always think when I go to the State Fair is, “How did the Oklahoma wine industry get […]

  • Do beer fans really want 3.2 craft beer to succeed?

Nick Trougakos | Published: Mon, Sep 22, 2014

I attended the first Heard on Hurd street fest in Edmond on Saturday night, and came away with some interesting observations. First, it was a fun and well-executed event, from my point of view. The biggest concern might have been some long lines at the food trucks. Since I wasn’t picky about which truck I […]

  • Feds approve labels for Elk Valley

Nick Trougakos | Published: Fri, Sep 19, 2014

There haven’t been a ton of new labels approved by federal regulators recently for Oklahoma beermakers. Prairie had three approved last week, but it’s been a slow scene otherwise. This week however, the state’s newest brewer appears ready to get into the game. The feds approved a pair of labels for Elk Valley Brewing Co. […]

  • ZooBrew VI beer lineup coming together

We’re now less than two weeks away from the annual ZooBrew beer tasting, and the lineup of beers at the Sept. 26 event is taking shape. If you’re looking for tickets, you better act quickly. I’m told there are only about 100 spots left for the event. Attendance will be capped at 850, so you […]

  • Prairie approved for new labels

Nick Trougakos | Published: Fri, Sep 12, 2014

Quick post today. Just wanted to pass along three labels that were approved by federal regulators this week for Prairie Artisan Ales. Keep your eyes open for these new releases. I do enjoy a beer made with blackberries, so I’ll be on the lookout for Tulsa Funk, myself.

  • Cutting-room floor: Roughtail Brewing

Nick Trougakos | Published: Wed, Sep 10, 2014

It’s time for the final installment in my cutting-room floor series, featuring leftover nuggets from my interviews with Prairie, Anthem and Roughtail for the LOOKatOKC piece on the state’s craft beer scene. Today, let’s hear from Roughtail brewmaster Tony Tielli. -On Roughtail’s first building at NE 14 and Broadway: “We had a really cool old […]

  • Roughtail to participate in new Edmond event

Nick Trougakos | Published: Tue, Sep 9, 2014

Is Edmond trying to stage its own version of H&8th? Maybe not exactly, but a pretty-cool-sounding community event/street festival is set to debut in Edmond on Sept. 20. That’s when the first Heard on Hurd is set at the corner of Broadway and Hurd. As a bonus to beer lovers out there, Roughtail Brewing Co. […]
