  • OU football No. 19 in preseason coaches poll; Oklahoma State unranked

Ryan Aber | Updated: 12 hr ago

Oklahoma is No. 19 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll, which was released Thursday. It's only the second time since the Sooners' 2000 national championship that OU is outside the top ten in the preseason coaches poll. In 2013, Oklahoma was at No. 13 in the preseason poll and finished the season with a Sugar Bowl win over Alabama and a No. 6 ranking. The Sooners, who were 8-5 last season, are one of three Big 12 teams in the poll. OU was N0. 3 in last year's preseason poll but finished unranked for just the third time in Bob Stoops' tenure. TCU, coming off a 12-1 season, is No. 2 in the poll behind top-ranked Ohio State. The Horned Frogs received one first-place vote. Baylor,

DALLAS — Every other player at Big 12 Media Days will be a clear-cut starter for their team this season, barring injury. The lone exception was Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight. Knight was the Sooners’ starter last season when healthy, but a rocky season last year left him in a quarterback battle with Baker Mayfield and Cody Thomas entering this season.

DALLAS — Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby didn’t take long to address how last football season ended for the conference — with Baylor and TCU being left out of the inaugural College Football Playoff. “This year has been interesting, challenging,” Bowlsby said Monday in his opening address at Big 12 Media Days. “It certainly was a wild football season last year and ended in a way that was hard to accept. “It is what it is.” Still Bowlsby said conference expansion was not on the horizon, despite University of Oklahoma President David Boren’s recent statements in favor of a 12-team league. “At the present time, I don’t think there’s critical

  • OU football: Sooners making a strong in-state recruiting push

By Ryan Aber | Published: Sat, Jul 4, 2015

NORMAN — Logan Roberson might not have been speechless but he was awfully close last month when the Harrah offensive lineman committed to Oklahoma. Roberson grew up dreaming of playing for the Sooners and hadn’t even allowed himself to think much of it being a real possibility until OU offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh extended the offer. Once the offer was there, though, Roberson didn’t need any time to think, committing on the spot. Roberson is one of three in-state players among OU’s six commitments for the 2016 class, joining Victory Christian linebacker Jon-Michael Terry and NEO and former Lawton High cornerback Maurice Chandler.

  • OU quarterback Baker Mayfield suffering from shoulder fatigue

BY RYAN ABER Staff Writer raber@opubco.com | Updated: Thu, Jul 2, 2015

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has shoulder fatigue but does not have structural damage, a source close to the program told The Oklahoman. Mayfield's soreness is due to "simply throwing too many reps," the source said. The source contradicted reports earlier this week that Mayfield suffered a torn rotator cuff. The official Sooners football Twitter account even addressed the report Wednesday night, also characterizing Mayfield's condition as shoulder fatigue. Mayfield, a junior, is competing with Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas for the starting quarterback spot. He sat out last season after transferring from Texas Tech. As a true-freshman walk-on, Mayfield made seven starts for the Red Raiders.
