By Ryan Aber and Jason Kersey | Published: Mon, Sep 1, 2014

Late in the second quarter of Saturday's 48-16 win over Lousiana Tech, Bulldogs’ running back Kenneth Dixon and Oklahoma linebacker Eric Striker got tangled up a bit after a play. When Striker raised his arm, Dixon fell back like he’d been hit forcefully. There was no flag on the play, which came two plays before Louisiana Tech kicked a field goal. Striker was asked Monday whether it looked like a soccer flop. “He did, didn’t he?" Striker said. “Flopping like that. Or LeBron James. Something like that.” Striker talked to Dixon about it after the game ended. “I was kind of caught off guard,” Striker said. “That’s just him trying to get a penalty. He sold it a lot, didn't he? Like he almost

  • Blake Bell remains an option at QB for Sooners

In Saturday’s game, Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight went the distance even with the Sooners having the game well in hand. That’s because backup Cody Thomas was banged up a bit, though OU coach Bob Stoops said he could’ve put Thomas in to just hand off the ball in the fourth quarter. Because of Thomas’ status, quarterback-turned-tight end Blake Bell […]

Phillips didn’t play a whole lot Saturday night — Oklahoma’s coaches want to make sure he’s healthy for Big 12 games that are going to determine the Sooners’ fate this season — but when he did, Phillips was every bit the handful for offensive linemen he was last season when healthy.

NORMAN — On Louisiana Tech’s third drive Saturday night vs. Oklahoma, the Sooners were forced to deal with their depth issues at linebacker. With Frank Shannon held out as he fights a one-year suspension from the school in district court, his replacement — sophomore Jordan Evans — was ejected for targeting. Evans moved to tackle Bulldogs’ quarterback Cody Sokol, diving at the quarterback as Sokol ducked and slid to avoid contact. It was a helmet-to-helmet hit. After a lengthy discussion on the field, referee Dan Romeo announced the targeting call as Evans and Shannon both raised their arms in disgust. The play was reviewed — and confirmed — and the Sooners were sent scrambling.

  • OU football notebook: Sooners' Blake Bell makes debut at tight end

BY RYAN ABER AND JASON KERSEY, Staff Writers | Published: Sat, Aug 30, 2014

Quarterback-turned-tight end Blake Bell didn’t get onto the stat sheet, going without a catch in his first game at the position. But Bell did a solid job blocking, including a couple blocks that sprung Sooners running backs for long gains in Oklahoma’s 48-16 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. After the game, Sooners coach Bob Stoops said he would have to evaluate film before making a final determination on how Bell performed. “It seemed to me like he played pretty well though,” Stoops said. The Sooners looked Bell’s way in the end zone late in the second quarter but Louisiana Tech defender Lloyd Grogan interfered with Bell and Bell drew the flag.

When Trevor Knight committed to Oklahoma, the Sooners got a package deal. His twin brother Connor Knight also joined OU as a walk-on. Connor, a tight end, earned playing time in five games last year on special teams. Knight recently spoke to The Oklahoman about the brothers’ decision to play together and what it was like for him to see Trevor’s performance in the Sugar Bowl: “Trevor and I kind of decided early on that we wanted to play together. He had the opportunity to get the scholarship to a big-time school. He was committed to Texas A&M and I was going to go as a preferred walk-on over there and when he switched his commitment here I got the chance to walk on here. It’s been awesome. We never really
