  • Bedlam baseball notebook: Freeman keeps hitters guessing in Bedlam win

BY RYAN ABER | Published: Sat, May 2, 2015

Oklahoma State starter Michael Freeman didn’t allow Oklahoma much of a chance to drive the ball Saturday night in Bedlam at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Freeman struck out seven and only three of his outs came in the outfield during a complete-game performance in an 8-1 Cowboys win. “His ball has very late action,” OSU coach Josh Holliday said. “Having tried to catch him before, the ball has a late unpredictability about it — some will sink, some will dart, every now and then some will cut. “When you’re not even sure how to get your hand around the ball, then you know the hitter’s not quite sure how to get his barrel square on the ball.

First, in the fourth inning, the Stillwater native laid out on a dead sprint, diving for Kyle Mendenhall’s liner near the right-field line to end the inning. Hassel came up big again with two outs in the sixth, coming in on Hunter Haley’s liner to right to catch the ball with a dive. He didn’t need to dive in the eighth inning, running into foul territory to catch Anthony Hermelyn’s pop-up with two on and no out. Hassel was playing right for just the sixth time all season after starting 26 games in center.

When Kerry Cooks met with his players for the first time as Oklahoma’s secondary coach, he put a number on the projection screen in the room. “They asked what that was,” Cooks said. “That’s what you guys finished in pass defense this past year. We attacked that right from the get-go. You can’t be a great team, can’t be a great secondary, can’t be a great defense if you’re 114th in the nation in pass defense. “I wasn’t here, but it’s unacceptable for OU.
