  • Cavaliers' blueprint: Make Warriors take bad shots

Berry Tramel | Published: Mon, Jun 8, 2015

There’s a new adage in the NBA that goes something like this. The best shot is an open shot. In other words, an open 15-footer is better than a contested 5-footer. An open shot from a mediocre shooter is better than a contested shot from a great shooter. Which brings us to Sunday night, Game […]

  • The Triple Crowns of baseball and horse racing are remarkably similar

Berry Tramel | Published: Mon, Jun 8, 2015

I’ve always been intrigued by the dichotomy of the two Triple Crowns. Horse racing’s and baseball’s. American Pharoah won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday to end racing’s 37-year drought of a Triple Crown winner — victories in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont, the three grand prizes for 3-year-olds. The baseball Triple Crown, of course, […]

  • The curse of horse racing is heroes don't last

We’ve barely met these magnificent beasts, and we’ll barely know them after that moment, win or lose.

  • Cavaliers bench a group of mummies

Berry Tramel | Published: Sun, Jun 7, 2015

We’re a few hours from tipoff of the NBA Finals’ Game 2. Which is good news for the Cavaliers. Time for their senior citizens to catch a nap. The depleted Cavs — missing Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love — will have to dig deeper into their roster than the eight-man rotation David Blatt used in […]

  • Here's a plan for FOX to combat ESPN in college football

Berry Tramel | Updated: Sat, Jun 6, 2015

Angst continues over the proliferation of college football’s 11 a.m. kickoffs. Reader Kent Casteel wrote me and asked why a little relief couldn’t come in the form of noon kickoffs. Make the windows noon and 3 p.m. instead of 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. If you remember, a couple of times in recent years, OU […]

  • Kendrick Perkins' hated rival was Warriors' key in Game 1

Berry Tramel | Published: Fri, Jun 5, 2015

Wow. What an NBA Finals opener. Overtime. LeBron scores 44. Great finish in regulation, with the league MVP and the man who should have been MVP both missing shots in the final 30 seconds. A star, Andre Igoudala, was reborn. But let’s start with the key player in the game. Everybody who was thinking Marreese […]

  • What does Leslie O'Neal have to do to get on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot?

Berry Tramel | Updated: Thu, Jun 4, 2015

Two hundred people were placed on the 2016 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. Leslie O’Neal did not make the cut. Maybe you thought O’Neal already was in the Hall. Or at least annually on the ballot as a perennial contender. But no. O’Neal, one of Oklahoma State’s greatest players ever was a two-time all-American, […]

  • Quarterback mystery is paramount in the minds of Sooner Nation

By Berry Tramel | Published: Thu, Jun 4, 2015

Natural curiosity. But the answer will not determine the Sooners’ fortunes in 2015. The key to OU football this season is not who, but how. Move the w to the back of the word. How will the quarterback play, no matter who it is?

  • Why the Warriors will win the NBA Finals

Berry Tramel | Published: Thu, Jun 4, 2015

LeBron James has been to five NBA Finals. Thursday night, that number becomes six. LeBron is 2-3 in the Finals, and frankly, that’s about where he ought to be. His Cavaliers were nowhere near in the Spurs’ class in 2007, and ditto for 2014. You might argue that LeBron’s Heat should have beaten the Mavericks […]

  • Cavs need a monumental upset to beat the Warriors

Berry Tramel | Published: Thu, Jun 4, 2015

The Warriors and the Cavaliers begin the NBA Finals on Thursday night, and LeBron James is so good, he makes you think Cleveland has a fighting chance. But LeBron will have to buck history to raise his third O’Brien Trophy. The Warriors are not just the best of the West. They are historically good. Golden […]

  • How about Dana Altman for the Iowa State basketball job?

Berry Tramel | Published: Wed, Jun 3, 2015

When a coaching change occur, everyone in our business trots out a list of candidates. Heck, when it’s basketball, I do a bracket; 64-coach bracket for OU or OSU, 16-coach bracket for the NBA. I’ve been burned. I didn’t have Jeff Capel in my 64-coach bracket for OU nine years ago, and he got the […]

  • The 10 best father-son duos in NBA history

Berry Tramel | Published: Wed, Jun 3, 2015

Two of the best father-son combinations in NBA history are represented in the NBA Finals. Both with the Warriors. The fathers of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson were uncommonly good — if under the radar — NBA players. Dell Curry is one of the best players in Charlotte Hornets history. Mychal Thompson was the first […]

  • New Year's Eve never again will be the same

Berry Tramel | Published: Wed, Jun 3, 2015

New Year’s Eve never will be the same. Oh, that’s not true. It will be the same in 2017, when the college football spotlight again returns to New Year’s Day. But for the next two seasons, Dec. 31 will be the biggest date of the college football season. The college equivalent of the NFL’s Championship […]

Berry Tramel | Published: Tue, Jun 2, 2015

An old friend of ours is retiring. Joel Litvin, the NBA’s president of league operations, announced Tuesday he will retire on Sept. 1. Litvin was the NBA’s chief legal counsel in the heady days when Oklahoma City first started its major-league waltz. And he was a big friend to the city. Litvin, not commissioner David […]

  • Tramel: Adrian Peterson looks bad but isn't all wrong

Berry Tramel | Updated: Tue, Jun 2, 2015

Adrian Peterson has reported to the Minnesota Vikings, and he did what most NFL players do. Backed down. Peterson talked tough in the winter, when he said the Vikings had not supported him during his legal troubles last September, when he was charged with injuring his child, and that his family was not crazy about staying in […]

  • Hoiberg's departure will harm Big 12 basketball

Berry Tramel | Updated: Tue, Jun 2, 2015

Fred Hoiberg apparently is headed for the Chicago Bulls. Which probably is good news for Hoiberg and probably is good news for the Bulls and most definitely is bad news for Iowa State basketball. And how can it be anything but bad news for Big 12 hoops? The Bulls are expected to name Hoiberg their […]

  • Get ready, OU fans, for more 11 a.m. kickoffs

Berry Tramel | Published: Mon, Jun 1, 2015

The Big 12 announced Monday that the OU-Tulsa game on Sept. 19 will kick off at 11 a.m. Oh boy. Another college football season, another round of morning kickoffs in Norman, which are the bane of most Sooner fans. Some OU fans like the 11 a.m. kicks, but most despise the suddenly-constant tradition, which means […]

  • Who is the greatest Donovan in American sport?

Berry Tramel | Published: Mon, Jun 1, 2015

Billy Donovan is the new Thunder coach, and you can say this. He’s got an interesting name. Traditional Irish name. The Irish meaning of Donovan is “brown-haired chieftain.” The Celtic meaning is “strong fighter.” It got me to thinking. Who are the most famous Donovans in sport? Some I knew, some I didn’t and some […]
