Raised on a crop and cattle farm near Lindsay, McDonnell started her journalism career in seventh grade, when she was elected reporter for her school’s 4-H Club. Labor Day weekend offers plenty of opportunities for fun From fairs and festivals to rodeos and ballgames, Labor Day weekend offers one last chance to celebrate summer before autumn takes hold. Although the Oklahoma State Cowboy football team is heading Thursday to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas, the University of Oklahoma Sooners are playing their season opener on the home gridiron Saturday night versus Akron.  But there are three days in the holiday weekend, and Oklahoma communities, venues and Indian tribes are planning many events to fill those days.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jake Owen hosted the Ninth Annual ACM Honors, an evening dedicated to recognizing the special honorees and off-camera category winners from the 50th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, Tuesday at the Ryman Auditorium. Performers included Roy Clark, who lives in Tulsa; Miranda Lambert, who has Tishomingo ties; and Restless Heart, which includes Oklahoma natives Paul Gregg (bass, vocals), Dave Innis (keyboards, vocals) and Greg Jennings (guitar, vocals). Other performers included Jason Aldean, Randy Houser and Owen. Presenters included Kelsea Ballerini and Muskogee natives The Swon Brothers.

  • Garth Brooks to play Phoenix shows in October

    For the first time in 19 years, Oklahoma country music superstar Garth Brooks will perform in Phoenix, Ariz. "The Garth Brooks World Tour with Trisha Yearwood" will play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at Talking Stick Resort Arena. Tickets will be on sale at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, according to a news release. There will be an eight-ticket limit per purchase.     NORMAN - Toby Keith took the stage at his new place in his old neighborhood and played new songs and old hits for an invitation-only crowd of about 500 people Tuesday night. The country music superstar and his band put on the private show on a newly built stage behind Hollywood Corners, a 1920s-era roadhouse and service station in north Norman that he recently bought and revamped into a roadside delicatessen. The intimate outdoor concert was filmed for the second installment in the State Farm "Neighborhood Sessions." An hourlong television special, "Neighborhood Sessions Featuring Toby Keith," is due to air on TBS in October, the same month the Oklahoma native will release his new album "35 MPH Town.

    Oklahoma City-based experimental rockers The Flaming Lips again collaborated with envelope-pushing pop star Miley Cyrus Sunday night at MTV's annual Video Music Awards. Cyrus, who hosted the VMAs, and the Lips closed the show performing their song "Dooo It" with a couple dozen dancing drag queens. Naturally, there's lots of silly string, gyrating and animal costumes involved. As my excellent colleague Nathan Poppe reports, Cyrus capped the performance by announcing the release of her new collaboration record called "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz," the follow-up to her platinum-selling 2013 release “Bangerz.
