LA Angels belt Seattle with 21 hits in 11-3 win
Updated: 2 min ago
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jason Vargas knows that whenever the Los Angeles Angels' lineup puts up an eye-popping performance befitting all of its money and talent, their starting pitcher's job becomes a whole lot easier. And though Vargas didn't need all the help he got Monday night, he thinks the Angels' latest offensive barrage means smoother days ahead for an up-and-down club. Albert Pujols had an RBI double among his four hits, Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homer, and Los Angeles pounded out a season-high 21 hits in an 11-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Alberto Callaspo matched his career high with four hits, driving in two runs during the Angels' seven-run sixth inning.

Norris touched up in 6th, Astros lose to WSox 4-2
Updated: 12 min ago
HOUSTON (AP) — The Chicago White Sox couldn't get anything going against Bud Norris through five innings Monday night. The sixth was a different story. Dayan Viciedo's bases-loaded triple in a four-run sixth sent the White Sox to a 4-2 win over the Houston Astros. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the White Sox and allowed them to avoid being swept in a four-game series for the first time since 2008. Chicago trailed 2-0 before Alejandro De Aza singled in the sixth and went to third on Adam Dunn's two-out single. Paul Konerko pulled Chicago to 2-1 with an RBI single that went between Norris' legs and into center field. Conor Gillaspie barely beat the throw to first on an infield single that

Stanton's 2 HRs lead Marlins past Diamondbacks 3-2
Updated: 27 min ago
PHOENIX (AP) — The Miami Marlins managed three hits off the Arizona Diamondbacks. Two of them were booming home runs off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton. That was the difference in the Marlins' 3-2 victory on Monday night, the Diamondbacks' fourth loss in a row. Patrick Corbin, trying to become the first left-handed starter in 35 years to go 10-0, allowed two hits through eight innings but gave up a soaring, two-run homer to left by Stanton that tied the game at 2 in the sixth. Stanton's line-drive home run to right off ex-Marlin Heath Bell (2-1) in the ninth put Miami ahead for the first time. It was the 100th homer of his career, and sixth in 43 at-bats at Chase Field. "He took that thing over, didn't he?" Marlin

Freeman's homer in 9th lifts Braves over Mets 2-1
Updated: 28 min ago
ATLANTA (AP) — Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Dillon Gee, giving the Atlanta Braves a stunning 2-1 victory over the New York Mets on Monday night in a game that was delayed nearly four hours by rain. Gee (5-7) totally shut down the Braves until the ninth, when Justin Upton singled with one out before Freeman launched a towering drive into the right-field seats on a 2-2 pitch to end a game that didn't start until nearly 11 p.m. Until then, Gee had allowed only two runners as far as second base. David Carpenter (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless ninth. Tim Hudson worked seven innings for the Braves, allowing only Gee's RBI single with two outs in the seventh.

HOUSTON (AP) — The Chicago White Sox lamented their inability to make plays in crucial situations after losing three straight games by one run each to Houston. They finally found a way to capitalize when they had a chance to change the game Monday night and it led to a 4-2 win over the Astros. Dayan Viciedo's bases-loaded triple in a four-run sixth inning helped the White Sox snap a four-game losing streak. They also avoided being swept in a four-game series for the first time since 2008. A's lose 8-7 in opener of 4-game series at Texas
Updated: 1 hr ago
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Oakland Athletics rookie Dan Straily outpitched an ace in his last visit to Rangers Ballpark. This time, the skidding Rangers were ready to hit — and score. Nelson Cruz homered twice, A.J. Pierzynski drove in three runs and the Rangers snapped a six-game losing streak with an 8-7 win Monday night over the AL West-leading A's. Straily hadn't allowed a homer in his last six starts and 38 innings until Pierzynski went deep in the second inning. The first of Cruz's two homers came off him as well. "He was wild within the strike zone," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "It was pitches in the middle of the plate that they took advantage of." Straily had a 2.

Wood pitches well again in Cubs' loss to Cardinals
Updated: 1 hr ago
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chicago Cubs starter Travis Wood seems to keep pitching better every outing. He just has very little to show for it. Wood (5-6) dropped his third straight start Monday night in St. Louis, as he came out on the short end of a 5-2 score. He allowed seven hits and four runs in seven innings. The loss was the third straight for Wood, despite the fact that he has a 2.70 ERA in 20 innings of work in those three contests. "Just wasn't enough really," Wood said. "I felt like I was making pitches and keeping them off balance pretty good. They got to me there in the fourth. They hit some good pitches and they did what they did. They're a good ball club over there." Chicago's offense has been dormant while

Miller, Molina lead Cardinals to victory
Updated: 1 hr ago
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Known for his defense, Yadier Molina is putting together an impressive offensive season. Molina had two more hits Monday night against the Chicago Cubs, including a two-run double, to help the Cardinals to a 5-2 win in the opener of a four-game series. Those two hits raised his average to a National League best .355. Although Molina has topped the .300 mark the past two seasons, hitting .305 in 2011 and a career-best .315 last season, he seems to be at a different level in 2013, though he appears afraid to he might jinx himself. "Next question," Molina said when asked about leading the league in hitting. "I'm glad we got the win for Shelby (Miller). At the same time, he pitched pretty good.

BY RYAN ABER | Published: Mon, Jun 17, 2013OKC RedHawks: Round Rock blows out RedHawks to end homestand
Oklahoma City RedHawks starter Brett Olberholzer didn't make it out of the first, reliever Alex Sogard's line wasn't any better and Round Rock clobbered the RedHawks 12-2 in front of 3,622 Monday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Olberholzer retired just one Express batter, getting No. 2 hitter Engel Beltre to fly out to center. After Beltre was retired, Round Rock delivered back-to-back hits and then Olberholzer walked four consecutive batters. Sogard got the first batter he faced to ground into a double play to limit the damage to just four. Round Rock added six more in the third off Sogard, led by a two-run single by Leury Garcia. The RedHawks were outscored 38-12 in losing the four-game series 3-1.
