The devastation was evident as the Heritage Hall boys team emptied out of their locker room following a heartbreaking 42-41 loss to top-ranked Okemah. It was the Chargers’ first state tournament game since 1977, but with many players and coaches in tears after the loss, they clearly wanted more than just an appearance. “That was a really tough way to end it for us,” said coach Chris Hamilton. “Still, I’m very proud of our team and how they represented themselves. Through three rounds of voting, Cowherd received more votes than any coach in the country to advance through the regional and final rounds. He received nearly three million votes in all. USA Today came to Edmond Memorial on Wednesday to honor Cowherd and present a check of $2,000 to the school’s athletic department.
