Wood pitches well again in Cubs' loss to Cardinals
Updated: 9 min ago
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chicago Cubs starter Travis Wood seems to keep pitching better every outing. He just has very little to show for it. Wood (5-6) dropped his third straight start Monday night in St. Louis, as he came out on the short end of a 5-2 score. He allowed seven hits and four runs in seven innings. The loss was the third straight for Wood, despite the fact that he has a 2.70 ERA in 20 innings of work in those three contests. "Just wasn't enough really," Wood said. "I felt like I was making pitches and keeping them off balance pretty good. They got to me there in the fourth. They hit some good pitches and they did what they did. They're a good ball club over there." Chicago's offense has been dormant while

Miller, Molina lead Cardinals to victory
Updated: 22 min ago
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Known for his defense, Yadier Molina is putting together an impressive offensive season. Molina had two more hits Monday night against the Chicago Cubs, including a two-run double, to help the Cardinals to a 5-2 win in the opener of a four-game series. Those two hits raised his average to a National League best .355. Although Molina has topped the .300 mark the past two seasons, hitting .305 in 2011 and a career-best .315 last season, he seems to be at a different level in 2013, though he appears afraid to he might jinx himself. "Next question," Molina said when asked about leading the league in hitting. "I'm glad we got the win for Shelby (Miller). At the same time, he pitched pretty good.

Updated: 29 min agoPaille, 3rd line push Bruins into series lead
BOSTON (AP) — The Bruins' third line was No. 1 in Boston. The revamped lineup of Daniel Paille, Chris Kelly and Tyler Seguin scored Boston's first goal and drew the penalties that led to another in a 2-0 win over Chicago on Monday night for a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup finals. "That's what we've got to do," Paille said. "To be effective, we have to skate like that and hustle. It's been good for us so far and we want to keep going." The line also led Boston's pestering forecheck that forced Chicago into repeated giveaways and penalties as the Bruins controlled play from the start. "We're having fun. The three of us are working hard and having fun, which is nice," Kelly said. "It's always fun, but some days are m

Stanton's 2 HRs lead Marlins past Diamondbacks 3-2
Updated: 33 min ago
PHOENIX (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton drove in all three Miami runs with a pair of homers and the Marlins handed the Arizona Diamondbacks their fourth straight loss, 3-2 on Monday night. Patrick Corbin, trying to become the first left-handed starter in 35 years to go 10-0, allowed two hits through eight innings but gave up a soaring, two-run homer to left by Stanton that tied the game at 2 in the sixth. Stanton's line-drive home run to right off Heath Bell (2-1) in the ninth put Miami ahead for the first time. Paul Goldschmidt drove in both Arizona runs with a homer and a single. Mike Dunn (2-1) threw a scoreless eighth inning to get the win. Stanton has six home runs in 43 at-bats at Chase Field.

Blackhawks lose Hossa, lose game 2-0
Updated: 33 min ago
BOSTON (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks needed all their offensive weapons against the Bruins' smothering defense and goalie Tuukka Rask. Instead, they lost one of their best before the game. Marian Hossa was a late scratch with an upper body injury before Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals, and the Blackhawks lost 2-0, falling behind Boston 2-1 in the best-of-seven series Monday night. Hossa's status for Game 4 on Wednesday night was uncertain. "We'll say day-to-day. We're hopeful he'll be ready for the next game," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "It was a game-time decision after the warm-up there. That's when we made the call." The Blackhawks had tweeted that Hossa was "out of the lineup after something appar

Blue Jays beat Rockies 2-0 for 6th straight win
Updated: 39 min ago
TORONTO (AP) — Josh Johnson took two extra days off to let a bothersome blister heal, then shut down the Colorado Rockies. Maicer Izturis hit a two-run single in the eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays won their sixth consecutive game Monday night, beating Colorado 2-0 behind Johnson and two relievers. "He had everything going on," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "Good, live fastball, ball had a lot of jump on it, and a good breaking ball." Johnson struck out a season-high 10 over 7 1-3 innings but remained winless in seven starts with Toronto, having received only 13 runs of support. He said the blister on the middle finger of his right hand, which developed during his June 9 start against Texas and twice de

Rangers end 6-game skid with 8-7 win over A's
Updated: 42 min ago
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nelson Cruz thrust his right arm into the air and shouted out in relief while running the bases after hitting his second homer of the night for the Texas Rangers. After a tough stretch, the Rangers had a loud and clear response Monday night to the message manager Ron Washington delivered the previous day. Cruz homered twice and the Rangers ended a six-game losing streak with an 8-7 victory over the AL West-leading Oakland Athletics, matching their run total during what had been the majors' longest active skid. "We were looking for what happened, get some base hits in RBI situations and just keep grinding," Washington said. "They just showed what they have the capability of doing — what they d

Bruins beat Blackhawks 2-0, lead Cup finals 2-1
Updated: 43 min ago
BOSTON (AP) — Tuukka Rask watched most of the action at the other end of the ice. And when the Blackhawks did make a late charge, he was ready. The Bruins goalie stopped 28 shots for his third career playoff shutout, helping Boston beat Chicago 2-0 on Monday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup finals. After playing four extra periods in the first two games, the Bruins made an early night of it with second-period goals by Daniel Paille and Patrice Bergeron. "It's better, I guess," Rask said. "Obviously, you go triple-overtime, (then) overtime the next game, it takes a lot of energy out of you. But we'll take a regulation win, for sure." Corey Crawford made 33 saves for the Blackhawks, who played without Marian

Oklahoma City RedHawks starter Brett Olberholzer didn't make it out of the first, reliever Alex Sogard's line wasn't any better and Round Rock clobbered the RedHawks 12-2 in front of 3,622 Monday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Olberholzer retired just one Express batter, getting No. 2 hitter Engel Beltre to fly out to center. After Beltre was retired, Round Rock delivered back-to-back hits and then Olberholzer walked four consecutive batters. Sogard got the first batter he faced to ground into a double play to limit the damage to just four. Round Rock added six more in the third off Sogard, led by a two-run single by Leury Garcia. The RedHawks were outscored 38-12 in losing the four-game series 3-1.

More possible Zimmerman jurors asked to return
Updated: 2 hr ago
SANFORD, Fla. (AP) — Potential jurors' views on race were the focus of questioning Monday in the second week of jury selection for the Florida murder trial of George Zimmerman in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin. A defense attorney questioned a potential juror extensively about her views on the racially charged case and whether she was bothered by protests led by civil rights leaders after Zimmerman's shooting last year of the unarmed 17-year-old Martin. A 44-day delay in Zimmerman's arrest led to protests around the nation. Protesters questioned whether the Sanford Police Department was investigating the case seriously because Martin was a black teen from the Miami area. Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic.

Investigators 'zeroing in' on Colo. wildfire start
Updated: 3 hr ago
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Rain helped firefighters douse Colorado's most destructive wildfire in state history, while a new wind-whipped blaze in California forced evacuations and threatened homes Monday near Yosemite National Park. Investigators believed Colorado's Black Forest Fire was human-caused, and were going through the charred remains of luxury homes destroyed and damaged in it last week. Even though the fire was mostly contained and more evacuation orders were being lifted Monday night, officials were not letting victims back into the most developed area where there was concentrated devastation from the fire because the area was being treated as a possible crime scene.

Motorists should be aware of motorcyclists on the road all year round, as motorists may see more motorcyclists as weather becomes nicer, according to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office. In 2011, 95 people were killed in motorcycle accidents on Oklahoma roadways.
