Langston University has named Elaine Powell its new head coach of women's basketball, the school announced Wednesday.
Powell previously served as an assistant coach at Alabama A&M, Ohio University and Grambling State. After becoming the first woman from Louisiana State to be drafted into the WNBA, she spent nearly a decade playing in the WNBA, where she was a three-time champion with the Detroit Shock.
"Elaine Powell is a proven leader whose dedication and commitment to excellence has shown in her work while coaching at numerous NCAA Division I programs for more than eight years," said Donnita Rogers, athletic director at LU.
Young women who've won various local Oklahoma pageants gathered recently to help put together a wall art project for the Diabetes Metabolic Research Laboratory at The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center. They were thanked by the hospital's foundation director, who noted the women also help raise funds to support her organization year-round.
