Features Editor Matthew Price has worked for The Oklahoman since 2000. He’s a University of Oklahoma graduate who has also worked at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and was a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund intern for the Dallas Morning News. He’s always been interested in comics, reading them at age 2, working in comic shops starting at 17, printing his first comics 'zine at 20 and buying a comic-book store at 23. His column on comics, Word Balloons, has run weekly in The Oklahoman’s Weekend Look section since 2001.Matt's blog, Nerdage, has been honored by the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists, and his store, Norman's Speeding Bullet Comics, co-owned with his wife, Annette, was nominated for the Eisner Spirit of Retailing Award in 2005.

    The above image is a world-premiere, and exclusive first look at “Agent Blue,” a new collaboration between myself and artist Don Rosencrans that will appear in upcoming issues of his “Welcome to Ralton” series. “Agent Blue” is my third announced comics project, following the prequel comic to the film “The Posthuman Project” and the upcoming “Speeding Bullet Comics Presents” anthology, which will feature my character, The Grave.

    Oklahoma comic stores join celebration of 20th anniversary of Hellboy character. The blue-collar paranormal investigator who hails from hell turns 20 this year. Hellboy was created by writer-artist Mike Mignola in 1994 and has appeared in comics, graphic novels, animated features and two live-action films. Hellboy was born a baby demon summoned by Nazi forces near the end of World War II.

    The Tulsa-based Oklahoma Defenders football team will host a “Superhero Night” on March 22, with special appearances by costumed characters at the game.  Sponsored by Oklahoma comic publishers Equinox Comics, the event will allow for fans to take pictures with costumed heroes. They’ll be joined by most of the cast members of the popular 1990s sci-fi show “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” and comic-book creators including Scott Snyder, current writer of “Batman.” The show has become a key stop for multiple Oklahoma comic book creators.

Here’s how Titan describes the series: Kidnapped and held for ransom as a teenager, billionaire fashion heiress Scarlett Couture subsequently trained in hand-to-hand combat and intelligence skills under her rescuer, Lt. Spencer Kelly, to ensure she’d never be held captive again.

    ATLANTA, Ga. — The ComicsPRO annual membership meeting wrapped up on a note of optimism and looking toward the future, as ComicsPRO president Thomas Gaul led a casual Q&A to close the meeting. Overall, the 2014 ComicsPRO meeting spurred a lot of discussion. Comic book writer, digital publisher and comic shop owner Mark Waid struck a collaborative tone in his keynote, talking about his years working in all aspects of the industry, and how he had underestimated the strength of the community created in comics retail.

    ATLANTA, Ga. — Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson was named the recipient of the 2014 ComicsPRO Industry Appreciation Award at the organization’s annual meeting.  ”I’m honored to be the recipient of this year’s Industry Appreciation Award,” said Stephenson. “The retailers who make up ComicsPRO are among the industry’s very best and I think they do some very important work on behalf of comics and the Direct Market, so as awards go, I think it’s really cool.” “I also think that even though it’s my name on the award, it’s actually more of a testament to how far Image has come over the last few years, and that couldn’t have happened without the hard work and dedication of all the talented men and women at Image Comics,” continued Stephenson.

        ATLANTA, Ga. — DC Entertainment pushed two major initiatives at the ComicsPRO membership meeting in Atlanta, Ga. The first is a push of weekly series in 2014.  ”Batman: Eternal” and “The New 52: Future’s End” will be joined by a third title in October, the title as yet unrevealed.

      ATLANTA, Ga. — ComicsPRO board president Thomas Gaul kicked off the 2014 membership meeting with details about the organization and the meeting.  ComicsPRO is the largest organization of direct market comic-book stores.   This is the eighth annual membership meeting of the organization. The meeting has the highest attendance of any ComicsPRO meeting, Gaul announced, and more non-member retailers in attendance than ever before.
