  • My first time to wear red socks

Carrie Coppernoll | Published: Mon, Apr 29, 2013

Whenever I run, I like to be as incognito as possible. We’re talking border-line ninja. I think my goal is to blend in as much as possible so nobody will notice the super-slow girl bringing up the rear. So my running attire for races is pretty standard: black shirt, black pants, white socks. No crazy ...

  • Hurrican names for 2013

Carrie Coppernoll | Updated: Thu, Apr 18, 2013

Hurricane season is almost here, and once again, I’m kind of offended there isn’t a Hurricane Carrie. The National Weather Service just recycles names on a six-year schedule. Lazy? Probably. The lists that really apply to the United States are the Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific. In the Atlantic list, they don’t even bother with names starting with letters Q, U, X, Y or Z. In the Eastern North Pacific list, they skip Q and U. Lame? Indeed. It’s only a six-year cycle. Can we not come up with a total of 12 U names and 12 Q names? And we only need six more for X, Y and Z! Let’s get it together, people.

  • Overheard: Oklahoma Department of Education

Carrie Coppernoll | Updated: Thu, Apr 18, 2013

Last week I had the opportunity to interview Derrel Fincher, director of learning technologies at the state Education Department, about the future of education. One of the things we talked about was the switch from learning specific content to learning how to solve real-world problems. An example he gave was using math to solve engineering problems instead of simply learning math formulas. He talked about how people sometimes just say, “Oh, well, I’m not a math person.” It’s true! I hear people say that all the time. While this quote doesn’t really fit into my story, I absolutely love it: “Nobody goes around and says I can’t read, but it’s perfectly acceptable to go around and say
