A version of this review appears in Friday’s Weekend Look section of The Oklahoman. “Oz the Great and Powerful” Traversing the Yellow Brick Road is a tricky balancing act that director Sam Raimi mostly pulls off in captivating style with “Oz the Great and Powerful.” Enchantingly spun off 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz,” one of the most beloved movies in cinema history, and the L.

Movie review: 'The Purge'

James DeMonaco's hazily satirical, sci-fi home invasion thriller's one big idea is buried beneath a clumsy onslaught of genre cliches and tired old fright-movie tactics.

While young American readers follow the antics of Jeff Kinney's Wimpy Kid books and Beverly Cleary's Ramona novels, British youngsters seem equally dedicated to their own spunky young troublemaker in Francesca Simon's popular Horrid Henry series.

Google takes starring role in ‘Internship'
Published: Fri, Jun 7, 2013
There are really three movie stars headlining “The Internship”: Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, and Google. If you can get past this Mother of All Product Placements, you'll likely find yourself chuckling a lot during this silly but warmhearted film, directed by Shawn Levy. Sure, it could be shorter, the script less predictable, the action (much) more believable. But hey, this is Vaughn and Wilson. If their on-screen banter doesn't quite live up to the riotous 2005 “Wedding Crashers,” it's still pretty darned funny. Billy (Vaughn) and Nick (Wilson) are watch salesmen. On a client call, they discover their company has shut down. Their own boss (John Goodman) thinks they're dinosaurs. And so, of course, they apply

A version of this review appears in Friday’s Weekend Look section of The Oklahoman. “Cloud Atlas” With three co-writer/directors, a star-studded international cast and six interconnected stories, maybe it’s not a surprise that “Cloud Atlas” is such a surprising cinematic creation: a big-budget spectacle and weighty art-house drama all in one.

Movie Review: “After Earth”
Updated: Thu, May 30, 2013
A malevolent force saps Will Smith of his charisma in “After Earth,” and it is not humanity's poisoned home planet or the ghastly creatures known as Ursas that hunt the exiled race. What takes down Smith is the emotion-averse, numbed-out direction of M. Night Shyamalan.

Movie review: ‘Fast & Furious 6’ – auto porn on auto pilot
Dennis King |
Published: Mon, May 27, 2013
As long as “Fast & Furious 6” is revving its engines and stomping its accelerators, it’s a swift and thrilling ride. But when it occasionally slows down for “storytelling” and its macho drivers step out for some “acting,” it becomes a demolition derby of dumbness.
