  • Awesome video: Watch 40 years of movie special effects in 1 minute

Richard Hall | Updated: Thu, May 21, 2015

I absolutely love the art of film, and the one film that changed my entire outlook on the artform is "Jurassic Park," which is also one of the most memorable films when it comes to the use of special effects. The company responsible for those effects is Industrial Light & Magic, which was founded in 1975 by George Lucas. As the company grew and the staff's talents exploded, ILM went on to do special effects for the entire "Harry Potter" series, the "Terminator" movies, the "Back to the Future" trilogy and many, many more. ILM has contributed to more than 300 movies and has won a combined 43 Academy Awards for visual effects and technical achievement.

  • 5 life lessons movies taught me: The Karate Kid

Richard Hall | Updated: Wed, Apr 22, 2015

Movies hold a very special place in my heart. Not only as a form of entertainment, but as an unrivaled art form that has taught me a number of life lessons. This week’s movie is “The Karate Kid,” the 1984 classic starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. Daniel LaRusso and his mentor, Mr. Miyagi, make one of cinema’s great duos. Akin to Luke Skywalker and Yoda, LaRusso is a young guy struggling with enemies in unfamiliar surroundings and Miyagi is the wise, patient teacher helping Daniel-san find his place. What transpires is a memorable coming-of-age tale that conveys some of life’s greatest — and hardest — lessons. Here are 5 life lessons “The Karate Kid” taught me.
