An Oklahoma City native, Aber graduated from Northeastern State. Before joining The Oklahoman, Aber worked for the Muskogee Phoenix, Southwest Times-Record in Fort Smith, Ark., and the Morning News of Northwest Arkansas.

    The University of Oklahoma Athletics Department wants to make it easy for student to attend Saturday morning's ESPN College GameDay. The show, which airs beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, is in town for Saturday's game between the No. 3 Sooners and No. 6 Kansas (1:30 p.m., ESPN). The game has been dubbed "The Rematch" by the network after the teams' Jan. 4 meeting in Lawrence, Kan., finishing in a 109-106 triple-overtime win for the Jayhawks. A free shuttle buses between Asp Circle on the west side of Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium and Lloyd Noble Center will run at 8 a.m. That pickup will include food giveaways as well as an appearance by Sooners coacj Lon Kruger and the College GameDay bus.

    Coming off his game-winning 3-pointer Monday night against Texas, Oklahoma's Buddy Hield was named to the Late Season Top 20 list for the John R. Wooden Award. The award is presented to college basketball's best player with a minimum 2.0 GPA. Hield's inclusion on the list is little surprise as he's the favorite for the award and other national player of the year awards. Through 23 games, Hield is averaging 25.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists. The Freeport, Bahamas, native is the only player in the country shooting at least 50 percent from the field (51.8), 50 percent from behind the 3-point line (50) and 90 percent from the free-throw line (90.2).

    Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione, the chairman of the NCAA Tournament selection committee, touched on several topics relating to the tournament during a conference call with reporters Tuesday. On the season so far: “To illustrate what kind of season it's been, Villanova was ranked No. 1 in this week's Associated Press poll. It became the sixth different team to sit atop that ranking. Only one other time in the history of the AP poll, which dates back to 1948, has there been more than six different teams ranked No. 1 in that poll. But the madness goes much deeper than just the top of the poll. Among the resources we use to help select and seed teams for the tournament are several computer metrics.

    When Lon Kruger took over as Oklahoma basketball coach in 2011, the Sooners were coming off a 14-18 season and a second consecutive year without a postseason appearance. Kruger has steadily improved the program, missing the NCAA Tournament his first season at 15-16 but winning 20 games his second season, 23 his third and 24 last year during a Sweet 16 run.     After falling to Kansas State 80-69 on Saturday, previously No. 1 Oklahoma fell to No. 3 in Monday's The Associated Press poll. The Sooners still received seven first-place votes but came in behind No. 1 Villanova and No. 2 Maryland. Oklahoma beat Villanova 78-55 in Hawaii on Dec. 7. Six teams received first place votes—Villanova (32), Maryland (13), No. 4 Iowa (11), No. 6 Kansas (1) and No. 7 Virginia in addition to the Sooners. Oklahoma faces No. 24 Texas at 8 p.m. Monday at Lloyd Noble Center. The Longhorns moved into the poll for the first time this season. Schafer (6-foot-3, 180 pounds) joins Reece Clark and Connor McGinnis as walk-on quarterbacks for the Sooners. Schafer is from Canadian, Texas, and also was offered a preferred walk-on spot at Texas Tech. Sooners' quarterback Baker Mayfield, who walked on at both Texas Tech and Oklahoma, offered Schafer congratulations on Twitter.
