ESPN's Chris Mortensen said Wednesday that a Packers source told him the 38-year-old Favre told coach Mike McCarthy in the past two weeks that he has the itch to play.

Favre sent a text message to his hometown newspaper, the Sun Herald of Biloxi, Miss., saying the report was "all rumor. No reason for it.” He didn't comment further.

The Packers declined to comment.

Favre retired March 6 after a 17-year career with Green Bay.

Cornerback Al Harris told ESPN that Favre made similar comments to him.

"I know he has the itch to come back,” Harris said. "If he will or not, I don't know.”

Gerald Green to join Mavericks: The Dallas Mavericks reach a one-year agreement with former high school prodigy Gerald Green. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Green was a high school star at Gulf Shores Academy in Houston before being taken in the first round of the 2005 draft by the Boston Celtics.

Prior to turning pro, Green had committed to play at Oklahoma State.

Boston traded Green to Minnesota in the deal that sent Kevin Garnett to the Celtics. The Timberwolves traded Green to Houston. Green was released after playing one game with the Rockets last season.

In three years in the NBA, the 6-foot-8 Green has averaged 8.1 points and 1.8 rebounds a game.

•Beasley takes elbow in first workout: Michael Beasley's first official practice with the Miami Heat ended quickly.

Beasley was struck in the chest by an inadvertent elbow during a defensive drill about 45 minutes into Miami's first summer-league workout session, and the No. 2 overall pick in last week's NBA draft was taken to a doctor for observation.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said the injury to the former Kansas State star was not serious and that they had a doctor look at him as a precautionary measure.

There was one piece of good news for Beasley. He signed his rookie scale contract with the Heat, one that will pay him about $3.6 million this coming season.

•Vols' Fulmer, Pearl get new deals: Tennessee signed football coach Phillip Fulmer and basketball coach Bruce Pearl to new deals that will keep them with the Volunteers through 2014.

Fulmer's deal is worth an average of nearly $3 million a year over the next seven seasons, a raise of nearly $1 million a year.

Pearl made $1.3 million last season. His new deal increases his salary to an average $2.3 million a year.

Hokies lose wide receiver: Brandon Dillard, a redshirt junior wide receiver expected to contend for significant playing time for Virginia Tech this season, will instead miss the season after rupturing his right Achilles' tendon in player-organized offseason workouts.

One of the fastest players in school history, Dillard was expected to help the Hokies alleviate the loss of the top four wide receivers to graduation after last season.

Big Brown returns to track: In his first workout since running last in the Belmont Stakes last month, Big Brown went five-eighths of a mile in a slow 1:06.71 at Aqueduct racetrack in New York.

Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. said the 3-year-old colt's feet, including the cracked hoof patched the day before the Belmont, are in fine shape.

The next race for Big Brown will likely be the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 3.
