Carolyn Orton, the mother of Bishop McGuinness forward Daniel Orton and former Oklahoma State forward Terrence Crawford, died of complications from Lupus on Tuesday night. She was 52.
"She was an amazing woman,” said McGuinness assistant basketball coach Andy Fisher, a close friend of the Orton family. "Everything Daniel did was for her. She was always involved in everything he was doing. She was the heart and soul of the family. "She will be deeply missed because of her love for all and the way she loved her family.” Her death added to a difficult year for Orton, who missed his senior season after having knee surgery in early November. Before the surgery, Orton was a player of the year candidate and has been a part of three state championship teams at McGuinness. He was named a Jordan All-American on Tuesday. Crawford was a standout at McGuinness before playing a key role on OSU’s 2005 Sweet 16 team. He was a two-time member of The Oklahoman’s Super Five team and was selected player of the year in 2000. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system can’t tell the difference between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Memorial Road Church of Christ, 2221 E. Memorial Road in Edmond.
