Amanda Marcum hasn't graced any magazine covers or strutted the catwalk for Ralph Lauren or Oscar de la Renta.

But considering that the 20-year-old model moved from Mustang to New York just two years ago, she's doing quite well.

So well, in fact, that she doesn't have to supplement her income by waiting tables or passing out fragrance samples. Even more impressive is that she can accept lengthy modeling assignments in Japan without subleasing her Upper East Side apartment.

That's success - even without the magazine covers.

Marcum, who modeled for two years in Oklahoma, admits the first few weeks in New York were rough. She didn't like the agency; she quit and came home.

Four months later, she was back in New York talking to other agencies. For five days, she lived in a cheap hotel that catered to models and actors. There was no phone or TV in the room.

She signed with another agency and moved in with a friend until she found her own apartment. Finally she could sleep at night. And dream.

She had heard stories about models who seemingly went from unknowns to superstars in months. Could it happen to her?

The reality is that the modeling business for most is a slow process. Marcum goes on several castings and go-sees a week - to get to know the clients, to see if she's got the right look for a product or service.
