A man killed in a boating accident in Rogers County last week has been identified by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Jonathon McClure, 19, of Claremore, was a passenger in a boat that hit a tree stump below the water’s surface about 3:30 p.m. Thursday on Claremore Lake.

He was dead at the scene about a mile northeast of the Claremore city park boat ramp, the patrol reports.

The boat’s driver, Sheldon Mashburn, 19, of Claremore, was injured and taken to a Tulsa hospital for treatment.

Both men were thrown from the boat. They did not wear life jackets. Mashburn was able to stay afloat, but McClure went under and did not resurface.

A passing boater picked up Mashburn. Crews from the Grand River Dam Authority recovered McClure’s body.
