Police have released the name of a 6-year-old girl who drowned at Longmire Lake.

Ava Bells, of Shawnee, drowned at the lake Sunday, police reported.

Bells was with friends, including two adults, when she went missing shortly after arriving at the lake to swim.

Bells did not know how to swim and was not wearing a life jacket, Police Chief Mitch McGill said. Her body was found about 125 feet from the shore in about 3 feet of water. Her body was found by rescuers who searched for her.

“We definitely recommend that any child who is not comfortable swimming in the water wear a life jacket,” McGill said.

Pauls Valley police received help from multiple agencies in the search, including the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police Department, the Garvin County sheriff’s office and others. has disabled the comments for this article.
