Sgt. Charles Schamel, a 13-year veteran of the Hefner division, was the officer who shot Patterson.
Schamel was struck by the car Patterson was driving. As he rolled over the hood of the car, Schamel fired his gun, police said.
Schamel was treated at the scene for bumps and bruises.
Patterson had a 9 mm handgun tucked into his waistband, but police said it didn't appear he ever drew the gun.
Dillan Wheeler and Dylan Robinson, both 20, were passengers in the car. They were both arrested on complaints of felony murder and taken to the Oklahoma County jail.
Police said Wheeler and Robinson were in the act of committing a felony when Patterson was killed.
Police were called to the store Friday about noon on the report of narcotics activity. Officers witnessed a drug deal, and then approached the person who made the sale, who was in his car, Capt. Dexter Nelson said.
Three officers and one supervisor, all in plain clothes, drove unmarked police cars toward the man, displaying their badges. Schamel approached the car on foot from the side and was hit by the car as the driver attempted to get away, Nelson said.
“That officer then fired on the man in the car, killing him,” Nelson said. “A car can be used as a weapon anytime you are standing in front of a car and someone comes toward you.”
