A helium balloon carrying an experimental saucer-shaped NASA spacecraft floated off a launch tower at the Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii, yesterday to test landing systems for future missions to Mars, Reuters reports.

A novel inflatable shield designed to burn off speed worked, but the final element of the test failed when a huge parachute, intended to guide the saucer to a safe splashdown in the ocean, did not inflate properly and failed to slow it down.
