The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum has named Steven M. Karr as the museum president.

Karr will begin work on July 1.

“Steven Karr's background aligns perfectly with the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum's mission to preserve and interpret the evolving history of the American West,” said Lance Benham, chairman of the National Cowboy Museum Board of Directors, in a news release.

“With a career that speaks to his deep appreciation of the diverse cultures that shaped our Western experience, he has distinguished himself as a highly impactful museum professional. We are looking forward to Steven’s engagement as a member of our leadership team in elevating the museum to a position of prominence.”

Before joining the National Cowboy Museum, Karr served as the executive director of The Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio. Prior to his role at the Briscoe, he served as the director and Ahmanson curator at the Southwest Museum of the American Indian at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, and as an assistant curator of history at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

He and his wife of 17 years, Carrie Elizabeth Miller, along with their 5-year-old son, will relocate to the Oklahoma City metro area.

“It is my sincere honor to come to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in this leadership position,” Karr said in a news release. “I am thankful for this tremendous opportunity and anxious to get to work with the staff, the board, and the institution’s many supporters in this effort to bring the West to a broad audience. My family and I are truly excited to be moving back to Oklahoma.”

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is at 1700 NE 63.
