National Signing Day: Tulsa Union duo of Carson Meier, Jeffery Mead officially sign with OU

In late May, Cal Meier sat down with his son not long after Carson Meier had received an offer from Oklahoma.

“How many offers do you need?” Cal asked. “It's OU.”

Carson had offers from around the country but his dad was waiting on that one from closer to home.

It didn't take long for Meier to realize that was what he wanted as well, committing to the Sooners a few days later.

Wednesday, the Tulsa Union tight end and Redskins teammate Jeffery Mead, a wide receiver, signed with the Sooners.

“My whole family is all OU fans,” Mead said. “I grew up loving OU.”

Before signing Wednesday morning, Mead put himself through a new workout routine.

Then he immediately went into the Union athletic office to sign and fax his letter of intent before doing a series of phone interviews.

A couple hours later, he joined a large group of other Union athletes signing in front of a packed gym at the school.

“I honestly didn't realize how big of a day signing day was,” Mead said, looking around at the crowd. “I didn't realize this was all going to happen.”

Meier might've committed to the Sooners a day after his dad sat him down to talk, but it was a conversation with Redskins coach Kirk Fridrich that turned the tide.

“I'm never a guy that tries to point a kid one way or another,” Fridrich said. “I just try to give them advice. One of the things I told them was don't get caught up in all the sexiness of the recruiting because the things you watch on ESPN and the things you see, that's not necessarily reality. This needs to be about what are you going to do next. The recruiting is not the event. That's not the end, that's the beginning.
