National Weather Service report on tornadoes

The following information on Saturday tornadoes was released Sunday night by the Tulsa office of the National Weather Service. The information may be revised upon further review, the report said.

1. The most significant tornado that occurred on May 10th in the Tulsa County warning area touched down 2.5 miles southwest of Chetopa, Kan., near the Oklahoma/Kansas state line. The tornado continued eastward into the southern part of the town of Picher where extensive and widespread damage occurred to numerous residential structures. At least 6 fatalities occurred in Picher and based on the structural damage in this area the tornado is rated an EF-4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale with winds estimated at 165 to 175 mph. The tornado continued southeast across the northern edge of the city of Quapaw, then crossed Interstate 44 near mile marker 325. The tornado then moved into southwest Missouri three miles northeast of Peoria. The tornado track length in northeast Oklahoma was approximately 29 miles with a maximum width of one mile.

2. A tornado was observed at 5:17 p.m. Saturday approximately three miles south of Crowder in Pittsburg County. This tornado briefly touched down on Lake Eufaula. There was no significant path and no damage. This tornado will be rated EF-0.

3. A tornado occurred seven miles southwest of Hartshorne in Pittsburg County at approximately 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The tornado was rated EF-2 with maximum wind speeds of 110 to 120 mph. The path length has yet to be determined. Maximum width was 150 yards wide.

4. A tornado touched down four miles west northwest of Haywood in Pittsburg County and lifted six miles east northeast of Haywood. The tornado was rated an EF-2 with winds between 120 to 130 mph. The tornado track was 10 miles long and 200 yards wide at its widest point.

5. A tornado occurred near Yanush in Latimer County at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Saturday. This tornado has yet to be rated and more information will be provided when available.
