WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is making progress in his recovery from a fractured right thumb, fielding groundballs and taking batting practice before a game against the Miami Marlins.

Zimmerman said he felt good after Wednesday's workout. He's been on the disabled list since April 13, one day after he injured his thumb diving back into second base on a pickoff.

Manager Matt Williams called the workout "a stepping stone" for Zimmerman and did not reveal any timetable for a potential rehabilitation assignment. He said the team wants to avoid any setbacks with the 29-year-old star.

Zimmerman fielded grounders at first base and also been working in left field. Williams hasn't ruled out Zimmerman playing any of those positions.

The Nationals have lost five of six and are hitting .195 during the slide. Left fielder Bryce Harper is still on the disabled list because of a sprained left thumb.
