A natural gas leak in downtown Oklahoma City Wednesday afternoon led to the evacuation of about 60 people from five buildings.

The leak began around 2:30 p.m. in the alley behind a Shell gas station near NW10 Street and Broadway Avenue, said Oklahoma Natural Gas spokesman Cherokee Ballard. The gas was shut off shortly after utility crews arrived.

Ballard said a contractor working on a construction project caused the leak.
