WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) — Navajo Nation lawmakers have voted to spend $2.3 million to decide whether the tribe should buy a coal mine in northwestern New Mexico.

The vote Friday came during a special session of the Navajo Nation Council in Window Rock.

The tribe announced in December that it wants to buy the Navajo Mine, the sole provider of coal to the Four Corners Power Plant.

It already had doled out $750,000 for a report on some basic questions regarding the mine.

The legislation approved Friday will allow the tribe to conduct an independent legal and financial analysis.

Tribal lawmakers have said they need to make a decision on the mine purchase by June 30.
