Securing an NBA team may have put Oklahoma on the national map, and now the state’s tourism industry needs to keep its efforts strong to promote the state, officials say.

"The Thunder will propel the state’s image on a national and international level,” said Hardy Watkins, executive director of the Oklahoma Department of Tourism.

Watkins spoke Monday morning as part of the Governor’s Conference on Tourism. The conference, which highlights the state’s third largest industry, runs through today and includes speakers on marketing destinations and presenters on Oklahoma’s growing agritourism business.

Oklahoma’s tourist economy generates nearly 73,000 jobs statewide and the interest doesn’t seem to be slowing down, said Natalie Shirley, commerce and tourism cabinet secretary.

A call to action

In the past year, the Tourism Department’s call center took about 25,000 calls from people wanting information about visiting Oklahoma. The center has answered 2,000 e-mails and processed 77,000 brochure orders. The marketing campaign has also been successful in reaching international visitors.

Watkins said the center received information requests from 20 to 30 countries a month. International visitors are a growing group. The state’s marketing campaign is targeted at travelers from Britain and German-speaking Europeans, Watkins said. On average those travelers stay in Oklahoma 15 days and spend about $3,000 per visit.

"The come here because they know it’s a great vacation, and they want to experience real America,” Watkins said.

I agree with Robert from Norman...better to flyover this state, rather than experience the teeth chattering roads, the collapsing bridges, the lousy infrastructure of the state as a whole....

Yeah, keep those darned "coasters" from ever coming here and spreading their attitude, y'all like your own attitudes more, and they're more opinionated than any coaster I've run across..

The nightlife sucks, there's nothing to do unless you like museums, and most places mentioned are better destinations...this all said by Okies and not "coasters" with "attitudes".....imagine that.....

Whats not to give a person a bad attitude about this place anyway?

I wish you guys the best in regards to bein a NBA town and then developing your guys own history with the new team. I look forward to 2011 when we get another team. Im not hatin...just congratulatin.

We don't want all these east coast bad attitudes coming here. Tourism isn't such a great thing.

Y'all Seattle people are still coming over here and crying over nothing. Get a life and stop crying. Pathetic.

I may live here but to be honest, no pun attended, you can't afford to vacation here for three days unless you're into museums and such. There's little to do here with the exception of bricktown. And nightlife is mediocre; many clubs caters to 18 & over crowd, not 30 or so. However, most cities like Tulsa, Wichita are down right boring. I've been to many places like Denver (nightlife sucks though), San francisco, Lsa vegas, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Chicago. Those places have a lot to offer than our own. And to the one who says that Dallas doesn't offer a whole lot; I disagree to some extent. Sure, there's shopping but the whole place including Ft Worth has a lot to be explored. I goes there whenever I want to go to a big city. And when I do I ever gets bored; unlike Wichita. Nightlife is better than ours. Besides, many okies goes there for a weekend getaway.

And let's be real; our roads and bridges suck and too many turnpikes; is that you want out of town visitors to experience when they get here. A few that I herd from the past say that even though they like visiting here, they don't like the roads and won't ever come back. Experience real America; that is if you don't mind being shaken, rattled and rolled by our crappy, disgusting infrastructure.

Hey Phillip if your not going to say it I will - who in the heck would want to vacation in OKC!!!!

*CLAY BENNETT IS DISHONEST AND A THIEF - I HAVE PUT THE CURSE OF SODO MOJO ON OKC THUNDER - MEANING MORE LOSSES AND NO CHANCE OF PLAYOFFS - HEY CLAY WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND - BTW - HOW ABOUT MAKING CHECK REQUEST TO GET PJ SOME MORE GLASSES - HE CANT EVEN SEE WHO HE IS GOING TO BE ON THE STARTING LINE-UP!!! LOL!!

Ok...Im not saying OKC is not a place to visit at least once in your lifetime.....but....A REAL AMERICAN EXPERIENCE?...thats a stretch man.Ive been to OKC, but there are a million other places with more culture and diversity than OKC. Its fine to have city pride but to claim that you offer (technically more than New York or L.A. which in my opinion is what Mr. Watkins is saying) is stupid. More is needed than a basketball team...I think that the leaders should have started with other avenues of drawing people before they dipped into the sports market (which eventually you would have to do). You guys dont ride horses...you guys need more sites....more things to do. By the way...dont care who Durant plays for (even though I was a Sonics fan to the death) but go KD. I c u Greenlake during the summer and hopefully in 2011 when we get the next Sonics...maybe we can resign ya.Ya never know.

I'm guessing that a lot of the tourism revenue is from in-state. Even Dallas doesn't offer a whole lot unless you like shopping. Without large mountains or the ocean nearby, it's hard to be become a huge draw.

"and we certainly don't compare well"...By golly, I'll agree with that 110%.....

I live here and love it here, but honestly, who is going to choose OKC as a vacation destination? We don't offer anything more than any other city on the plains, and we certainly don't compare well with Dallas or Denver or KC when it comes to serious entertainment or shopping.

Having the NBA is just one of many factors that will bring more people in. In and of itself, it won't do much, but it's the exposure to the rest of country that helps. Maybe now people on the coasts will start to realize that we don't ride horses anymore.

Yeah, it's a crying shame I get up early in the morning, isn't it? Nice of you to drag yourself out of bed at 0900 in the morning.....I guess we all realize who the ambitious one is, right??

It is really sad that Pathetic Paul gets up every morning looking for an article about the Thunder so he can post some drivel about how horrible OKC and OK are. You can leave anytime, Pathetic Paul. Nobody will miss you.
Chris, Warr Acres - Oct 14, 2008 at 9:15 am
I guess those 25,000 calls last year were from people in other, better areas of the country who wanted to see how the "other half" lived.

Honestly, the people interviewed for this article actually believe that it takes an NBA Bassaball team to bring recognition to OKC? How pathetic is that anyway? Did they really feel that this place is so much of a flyover city/state that it had no appeal until a bassaball team got here?

Save your money People! If the NBA is the only reason you'd come here, go to another NBA city instead, you'll be more satisfied........
