NCAA Tournament: Steve Fisher in no hurry to retire
Published: March 19, 2013
Steve Fisher, who turns 68 on Sunday, confirmed that “my plans” are to return for a 15th season as the coach at San Diego State and his 34th in college basketball, and perhaps more.
Fisher has two years remaining on a four-year deal he signed in 2011 that pays him $800,000 per season plus bonuses, but he conceded that at his age, at this point in his career, coaching becomes a year-to-year proposition. And there was a rumor circulating through Mountain West coaching circles – the cynic will say it was for recruiting purposes – that this season would be his last, that he would step aside and hand the program to Brian Dutcher, his longtime assistant and the anointed “head coach in waiting.”
