Neutral colors can help resale value

DEAR MI-LING: We are about to start a remodel of our kitchen and bathrooms. After searching the Web and asking advice, we are in a pickle. It seems that quartz countertops are now in vogue for their "maintenance free” qualities.

Granite looks great but it has drawbacks. We have chosen maple shaker-style cabinets with a "honey spice” color. Assuming we go with the quartz, what would be your color choice? Our floor will be bamboo (medium shade) with stainless appliances.

P.K.

DEAR P.K.: The question is: What colors make you feel comfortable and will blend in well with your design?

I happen to love granite and have used it in several of my homes. If you like the look of granite, go with what you like, NOT what’s in for the moment. Quartz countertops are also very beautiful and other options include concrete and marble to name a few.

Most tile and granite stores will give you small samples to take home. I would pull together all of your design elements and select the piece of stone, granite or quartz that feels good in the space.

I would keep the colors neutral for resale value. Black looks really good with honey spice but you can mix it up and top a center island in one color and then the surrounding counters in a lighter color. Mix it up and have fun.

Now go out and create your own unique comfort zone!
