RENO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada pitcher Braden Shipley has been named to a watch list of the top amateur baseball players in the country.

USA Baseball listed the junior right-hander Thursday among 60 candidates for its annual Golden Spikes Award.

ESPN and Baseball America both ranked Shipley among the top 50 in their midseason 2013 draft projections. School officials say the Medford, Ore., native's fastball has been clocked at 99 mph. He's struck out 76 hitters in 80 innings so far this year with a 6-2 record and a 2.70 ERA.

Shipley was the Western Athletic Conference pitcher of the year as a sophomore with a 9-4 mark and a conference low 2.20 ERA. In 188.2 career innings, he has struck out 177.

USA Baseball trims its list to 30 semifinalists May 28.
