We are approaching a new season, ushering in new ideas, fresh bands, more local shows, and cooler nights. While looking over my calendar for past summer, I realized that I went to some incredible shows, but all of them within the same five to ten venues. I am a loyal patron when I find a place I like, there is no doubt about that.
However, with fall comes renewal and change, and I have set a personal goal to visit two new venues a month to watch bands who I have never seen perform before. LOOKatOKC ad sales representative Nancy Simoneau will be accompanying me to different locations and reviewing these venues, and I am going to tell you all about our adventures on the town.
If you are with a restaurant or venue in the metro area and want us to swing by and enjoy your live music, tweet us @LOOKatOKC and we will do our best to paint the town with you. Here are my show picks for the coming weeks:
The Opolis 11th Anniversary, Aug. 16-17, 113 N Crawford, Norman. Last year, this was one of my favorite local music events, comparable to a little slice of Norman Music Festival. For two days, my favorite Norman venue will be hosting the best of the best in Oklahoma musicians. The two-day line-up includes Prettyboy, Shi++y/Awesome, Locust Avenue, The Copperheads, Poolboy, Vacay, Colin Nance, Pink Pony, Team Nightstand, BRONCHO, Dressy Bessy, DEERPEOPLE, The Low Litas, The Feel Spectres, and Gentle Ghost. This is a free show. My birthday is Aug. 16, and I would like to thank Marian and Andy for putting together such an incredible celebration for everyone in the Oklahoma music scene.
Bed Ppl and Colourmusic Aug. 16 at The Blue Note, OKC. You all know Grace Gordon from Oklahoma Rock Show, but I bet you didn’t know that her boyfriend, Steven Worlow, has been making sick beats. Combined with Gordon’s soft and dirty rap lyrics, they are Bed Ppl. This is an all-Leo bash, and the crowd will be celebrating with the loud, beautiful sounds of Colourmusic. Gotta love August.
Ryan Drake’s Birthday Bar Mitzvah at 51st St. Speakeasy, Aug. 24, OKC. Since we Leos like to book shows and throw parties, I suggest that you go to all of them. I have to say, Ryan, you put together one hell of a party. Expect performances from Horse Thief, Josh Sallee, Deerpeople, and Ali Harter with her full band. That lineup gives me chills.
