New Christmas lights brighten Edmond

EDMOND — New white LED Christmas lights adorn downtown streets and city-owned buildings.
City officials spent nearly $43,000 to replace the Christmas lights and install decorations this holiday season.

“There was a problem last year when an out-of-town company destroyed the lights, and we had to purchase new ones,” said Jerry Cullum, Edmond's facility maintenance superintendent. “Last year, I had to have my guys out there a lot to make sure the lights were working.
“It was a bad deal. I don't think we will have a problem this year.”
City officials said they purchased LED lights because they are expected to last longer and are more energy-efficient.
“The city wants to be more green and energy-efficient,” Cullum said. “We are always trying to push everyone to go green.”
Edmond purchased about 5,000 larger bulbs that outline the downtown city buildings. An additional 6,000 smaller white lights decorate the trees.
The lights decorate 36 trees and 38 poles on Broadway from Edmond Road to Hurd, and 22 trees and 23 poles on First Street from the railroad tracks to Littler Avenue. Six downtown city buildings and the Festival Market Place pavilion and a storage building, along with five trees and 14 poles, also have new decorations.
