New Ford Center floor, with Thunder logo, will be in place next month

The same company that constructed the Boston Celtics famed parquet floor, and constructs basketball courts for NCAA Regionals and Final Fours, has built a new court that will be used by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Connor Sport Court International began working on the new Ford Center floor soon after it was announced the team was relocating from Seattle. The company, based in Salt Lake City Utah, has been waiting on the nickname so the court can be painted.

"The court will be delivered by Oct. 20," said Jeff Morton, Connor's marketing manager. "The last process is painting the logo. We've already produced the floor. It's been sanded and ready to be painted."

Thunder management chose Connor after seeing the company's floor last year at the NCAA women's Midwest Regional held in March at the Ford Center.

"The Thunder went with our Power Guard pad, a resilient pad with a plastic encasement,' said Ron Cerny, president and CEO of Connor Sport Court. "It gives the best possible shock-absorption to the player."

The 6,720-square foot maple court, built to NBA specifications, was constructed at the company's mill in Amasa, Mich. Once the floor has been painted, and cured, it will be delivered on flatbed trucks to Oklahoma City.

Buy why does it take six weeks?

"It has to cure," Morton said. "After it's painted we have to put polyurethane over the top. When they ship it can get damaged when they start stacking it (on trucks), so that's why we use giant tarps to protect it. Then you have to get it set up in the facility."

Connor Sport Court began constructing sports flooring more than 100 years ago. Connor is responsible for courts used by the Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks and approximately 20 NBA practice facilities. The company also is responsible for floors used at the NCAA volleyball national championships.

The company constructs more than 2,000 courts a year. Clients range from major universities to churches, home gyms, high schools and NBA teams. Connor constructs courts used at NCAA men's and women's Regional and Final Four tournaments. Courts used at NCAA events usually are sold to colleges or universities.

"These guys are playing basketball at the highest level," Morton said. "This is a big deal. We're happy to be associated with another NBA team. All our wood is MFMA certified, which means it's part of the green system. We adhere to strict standards as far as foresting and environmental guidelines."

Bonnie: what are you basing your statement "...that most of us consider it money well spent". You can't be talking about the Ford tax increase vote because only 8.5% of the citizens bothered to cast a "yes" vote.

Tell me 007...do you still believe that the Ford tax will only last 15 months as promised(and voted on) now that the truth is coming to light with the hokey contract Clay and the City agreed to?

"It's simply because you two post it on every single Thunder article."...almost in the same manner as you post about "it's only 2 bucks, no 4 bucks, no 10 bucks monthly" on nearly ever Dunder article, 007?? I thought so....

It's simply because you two post it on every single Thunder article...What's done is done, we are all out about 10 bucks a month and most of us are gearing up for the state's first ever major league team...I guess we should be comforted that when the season actually starts your lame 5AM posts will be about how bad the team is instead of the exciting world of taxes

Hey Chris, and Bonnie, and 007....why is it you (and a few others as well) hate the fact that somebody brings it to light that the citizens of this city were lied to? Is it because you have low standards and just accept lying and deception as a part of your everyday lives? Is it because this is the way you live your lives and don't see a problem with it? Or perhaps it's just that you won't admit you were duped because of some sort of foolish pride and you can't admit you were wrong in your little egotistical world? Whatever the reason, you KNOW you were lied to, so trying to spin it off by calling a certain percentage of us on here as "bitter", or "flakes" or "shat for brains" is merely a cover for your own shortcomings....

Bonnie, what I post is the truth, please refute any of it that you want. Why don't you tell them the rest...that only 8.5% of the residents of OKC cared enough to get out and vote "Yes".

Tell everyone the rest Larry. Tell them that most of us consider it money well spent. Tell them that when we as a city voted on the Ford Center improvements that only 5% of our citizens felt strongly enough against it to actually go out and vote against it. Tell them that even though you post your negative posts daily and have for months and even years, That nobody......NOBODY but paul and Seattle fakes ever agree with you. You should probably read the book "How to win friends and influence enemys" because you are lousy at gaining support for your cause.

"I think it's safe to say that Clay Bennett and Co paid for the court, not the citizens of Oklahoma City via the MAPS tax extension." Chad, are you new here? The taxpayers are paying for everything when it comes to the Ford and the practice facility (the Team has to give its approval on everything down to the furniture and light fixtures). Read the lease and the City Ordinance. The City (taxpayers) ARE fooring the bill, 100%

Associated Press -- “Hornet would get up to $10M if temporary move fails” -- Updated: September 21, 2005.

"The agreement calls for the city to install A NEW BASKETBALL FLOOR, BUILD A HORNETS TEAM SHOP AND MAKE OTHER UPGRADES TO THE FORD CENTER and also attempt to repeal sales tax on Hornets tickets and seek tax credits and benefits for the team."

So we already have an NBA floor that is only 3 years old (part of the $2 M in improvements to make the Ford NBA ready for the Hornets).

Either way, we were all aware that a new floor would be needed!! Or at least I'd hope the majority were. It's stupid to think they would play on a generic already used floor. The floor is probably a minor expense compared to the construction and electronics costs for the Ford.

Is this the same ESPN that said Brett Favre is staying retired, and Les Miles is going to Michigan. Yep, if it is on ESPN, you know they triple checked all of the facts.

Good points from that ESPN quote, although I'd take issue with the description of the Ford Center as "minor league." Not sure the person who wrote that has ever been in it. It may not measure up (yet) to the top facilities around the country, but when the Hornets were here the general consensus, among the NBA folks, was that it was about middle-of-the-league compared with the other facilities. That's not minor league. It will rank closer to the top when the renovations are finished.

Hey Chad..something to think about: Here's a quote from ESPN..."The Ford Center, a minor league facility, is undergoing a major league, taxpayerapproved, $120 million renovation. Priorities include rigging the building with cable-TV cameras and wires, laying down a new court and sprucing up the locker rooms with new carpet, better lighting and locks for the players' cubbies, says arena GM Gary Desjardins."" PLease note the key words "taxpayer approved", and "laying down a new court"..can you put 2 and 2 together? Thanks for playing, Chad....

Silly numskulls, a lightning bolt is not a sound wave. It they want to visualize thunder, the logo should be a wave form of some kind. If they want to use the lightning bolt, the name should be The Oklahoma City Flash. It sure would make cheerleader tryouts go much more fun as they would be called The Flashers. All I know for sure is that most of us will have to wait until all the hype blows through. Then ticket prices will finally fall to a decent prices. What we want is the rubes to keep paying tens of thousand for sky boxes and front row seats. That will keep Clay from filing bankruptcy. But we want interest in the rest of the seats to fall off drastically. A loosing first season would help a lot.

pauls really funny, he's awfully obsessed with this whole deal, isn't he. Why are you so bitter, paul? He doesn't want anything to do with the new team but reads and posts on every story associated wjth the team. He claims that he avoids paying any MAPS taxes by paying even higher sales taxes in Yukon but then wants to gripe about how those OKC sales taxes are being spent. What a fricken wierdo. Get a life, paul.

Face it, Chad, the Dunder staff is not paying for one thing in the new Ford. As far as the "generic" floor, I don't recall any complaints when the Hornets were in town, did you?

I don't guess they could produce the floor without that great new logo could they. If so, then we could have a contest for all the school children come come down on the floor during the first game half time and color a logo on to it.
