NORMAN — A new neighborhood park on leased land next to Monroe Elementary School is already attracting visitors.
The park at 1601 S McGee Drive is used exclusively by students during school hours, but is open to the public the rest of the time, Parks Director Jud Foster said.
Money for park land was collected from developers years ago when the neighborhood was built, but had never been used because no appropriate park site was available.
A portion of a four-acre tract just east of the school is used by students as a playing field for soccer and other games, but the remainder was open space, Foster said. City and school officials began looking at the property last year as a potential park site.
The park is now complete with playground equipment, although some cleanup work and landscaping still needs to be done, Foster said.
The parks department is planning improvements at other neighborhood parks, including upgrades at Adkins Crossing Park, 2136 24th Ave SW; Sunrise Park, 3234 Skyline Drive; Colonial Commons, 1909 Beaumont Drive; and Colonial Estates, 1641 E Lindsey St.
