BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The National Park Service has appointed a legislative affairs specialist in Washington D.C. as the new superintendent for the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
The park service says Denice Swanke will begin her duties on Oct. 15. She will replace Kate Hammond, who is the new superintendent of Valley Forge Historical Park.
Swanke has worked since 2010 as the congressional liaison for the park service's Alaska and Pacific West regions.
She has previously worked at Zion, Yellowstone and Grand Canyon national parks, and for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
Swanke has a graduate degree from the University of Montana and her husband, Steve, was deputy chief ranger at Yellowstone until he retired in 2007.
