RIVER SPRINGS The incorporation of towns in Oklahoma isn't as rare as people might think.

In fact, the most recent incorporated town to file with the Secretary of State was Tullahassee in Wagoner County on June 1, 2007.

Thirty-six towns have incorporated statewide in the past 10 years. Among those listed are Medicine Park, Jan. 23, 2003, in Comanche County and Perkins, May 20, 1999, in Payne County.

Perkins dates to the 1889 Land Run, and Medicine Park was a thriving tourism destination in the roaring '20s.

"We have a lot of towns that file with us so they might qualify for federal grants and such,” said Beth Garner, a representative from the state agency's business division. "A lot of towns are what we call unincorporated.”

No one is certain when a town such as the proposed River Springs sprouted from nothing to gain incorporation.
