Superintendent Karl Springer shook hands with custodians, made mental notes as he talked to teachers and high-fived students as he toured two Oklahoma City School District campuses on the first day of class.

Top official considering needs of students, faculty
In between classrooms, Springer asked Liles about matters such as air conditioning units and student enrollment. Speaking to Liles and her teachers, he asked what they need.
He promised to get the Southeast courtyard mowed, noting it on an index card.
He told technology teacher Bill Chamberlain to e-mail a reminder about his need: a connection to the district's IT network.
"I don't want it to end with this conversation,” Springer told Chamberlain.
Springer also joked with faculty, too.
When a teacher at Capitol Hill High School offered Springer a cookie to refuel, he responded, "No thanks. I'm trying to reduce the size of the administration.”
Springer plans more visits
Overall, Springer said the 2008-09 school year got off to a good start.
"The first day of school is always going to be great,” Springer said.
But he said he wants to make sure that feeling carries over from day to day.
"A couple hours every day I'll just be doing this all year, just walking around, visiting with teachers, asking what we can do to make it more likely that our students will be successful.”
