Superintendent Karl Springer shook hands with custodians, made mental notes as he talked to teachers and high-fived students as he toured two Oklahoma City School District campuses on the first day of class.

He started Thursday at Southeast High School, where most students were already in class by 8 a.m. Only a few stragglers were left to clear the metal detectors.

A group of JROTC students stayed in the hall with their instructors to talk with Springer — one girl locking her jaw once to stifle a yawn in front of the superintendent.

From there Southeast Principal Trina Liles walked him through the school.

Springer, starting his first school year as district superintendent, stopped in Room 223 — "Good morning,” he told the class. Next up was Room 222, where the geometry teacher was reviewing the course syllabus. And as he entered Room 224, a staff member brought in a student who had gotten lost.

"You only have 174 days left. It's downhill from here,” he told choral students in Room 202.

Top official considering needs of students, faculty
In between classrooms, Springer asked Liles about matters such as air conditioning units and student enrollment. Speaking to Liles and her teachers, he asked what they need.

He promised to get the Southeast courtyard mowed, noting it on an index card.

He told technology teacher Bill Chamberlain to e-mail a reminder about his need: a connection to the district's IT network.

"I don't want it to end with this conversation,” Springer told Chamberlain.

Springer also joked with faculty, too.

When a teacher at Capitol Hill High School offered Springer a cookie to refuel, he responded, "No thanks. I'm trying to reduce the size of the administration.”

Springer plans more visits
Overall, Springer said the 2008-09 school year got off to a good start.

"The first day of school is always going to be great,” Springer said.

But he said he wants to make sure that feeling carries over from day to day.

"A couple hours every day I'll just be doing this all year, just walking around, visiting with teachers, asking what we can do to make it more likely that our students will be successful.”

also, who gives a hoot what DOK thinks or bans? it is after all just another publication (rag mag) that uses cheap ink. maybe crappy ink is the secret to the gaylord empire.

No tu. If they ban you then the rest of us are suspect and subject to the same self censorship. If you don't want your opinions out for public viewing, then don't submit them. You have a choice here. Excercise it. You are not a slave to the keyboard or the DOK. Rest awhile and give your soul a mini break...Life is not just turmoil, sometimes it can be quite pleasent.

ok. tu you are just weird. unless you get downright obscene you should not change your posting. the purpose of this forum (I can hardly believe that DOK even allows it) is to express opinions no matter how strange. if it weren't for the strange and the weird, how could any of us pat ourselves on the back in praise of how normal or moral we are? i do admit the funny and runny is pretty gross, and i have no idea what it meant...it just sounded nasty....but i can sleep tonight telling myself "i would never say such a thing publicly (i hate spelling). That does not mean i might not say it in private. I am shameless in my hypocrisy, but hopefully forgiven in my Savior. OK. Now take your best shot, you weirdo. lol

Well this semi literate mutant okie Bible dummy facist was just wondering. DOK why allow commentary at all (barring outright filth and obscenities (spelling) do you open this forum? So much for freedom of the press and speech to the general public. How rude! I only take the Sunday paper to get the T.V. guide, just so you will know. Take that!

What a brilliant reply. Do you get paid to be a snot or are you well trained with lots of practice?
Sallie, Del City - Aug 22, 2008 at 10:21 am
tu, where were you trained?
Sallie, Del City - Aug 22, 2008 at 9:37 am
Why is the brand new a/c not working at Southeast? I thought we paid for new a/c units for every school in MAPS for KIDS. Now if I were at Capitol Hill I would worry about the annual "burn the school" tradition. The latest victim was the auditorium. I do think that they have the neatest gym. Its not the biggest but it has style and class.
